J.River Media 14 sounded quite good under Windows 7 set to WASAPI/Play from memory. No problems with these settings with the ole Crimson. Has anyone else tried this?

I tried the same configuration into the Cosecant and I think it sounds quite good. However, if I run WASAPI AND have JRiver set to play the entire file from memory, I get some extreme flakiness going on.

  I posted some info on the JR board on how to get WASAPI running more smoothly by changing some buffer values in the registry. Let me see if I can dig it up...

        Thank you very much for this tweak. It further enhaced the sound on Jriver with Asus DX2 card with Windows 7 .
        Excellent sound in Windows 7 just shifted from Windows XP.. sounds...
        1. Cleaner
        2. Warmer
        3. Less Noise

        I've mentioned that parameter several times in the J. River forum in the last couple of years. However, in MC 14, you can now set that value in the Tools/Options/Playback dialog as "prebuffering". I think that is simpler and safer.
        
        If you look at the registry setting, you may see more than one "Secondary Buffer Minimum MS" key with an optional number in parens appended to the name. I did a quick experiment and found that there is a separate setting for each zone.

Sounds good to me too!

JR 14 works great for me except for some reason my TV card won't work anymore...bummer.

Did I mention it was yours truly who convinced them to make a WASAPI plugin...

I tried to get them to make a version that was lighter on resources [just for audio] with the reasoning it might improve sound even further, but was shot down rather quickly by JR groupies.

JR is a great product, I also figured if they were to sell it as a basic audio product only at a lower price and offer the other features at a minimal cost it might be more accessible to a wider group of people...and at the same time give them a metric to measure which features are truly value added [measured by sales]. Many businesses use this approach with various products, its nothing new.

Anyways, yes it does sound good and its also a good practice to re-visit and keep experimenting with different player once in a while...small changes on the software end can make a big difference in some systems.

  See link below. The only audio features missing from the free version are WASAPI and multiple libraries. I have only tried Vista briefly, but preferred kernel streaming via ASIO4ALL, which does work with both the free version of J.River and Vista.
  
  It's been several months now, but as I recall the sound between ASIO4ALL and WASAPI were identical but with ASIO4ALL the sample rate changes were automatic, while WASAPI (like the QuickTime engine that runs iTunes) requires manual sample rate changes.

    Yes I am aware of Jukebox, basically it is similar to what I was talking about except for the lack of WASAPI and other aspects that certain software players addressed to obtain superior sound. Speaking of the work done by Cics, XXHighend and Amarra for example...getting deeper into the Kernel of an OS and workings of processors to get the maximum potential. JR has some very good code writers, they made the WASAPI plugin in less than a week [from idea to user ready]. I am sure they can give other High-End audio software's a run for the money. If they can make a product that sounds that good aiming for the average Joe, just think what they can do if they really tried...
    
    If you can not hear a difference between WASAPI and ASIO I won't argue that, but I can and so can others....Maybe if you listened with a pair of Dynaudio's the difference would be clearer ~wink~
    
    At the time WASAPI needed a little tweaking to get it to work correctly, namely with the buffer.
