Is anyone aware of whether there is an improvement in audio replay from a good sound card between SP2 and SP3?
Upadting SP2 seem to doubles the disc space needed including things like .netFrameWork and all these security updates.
I have a very fast SP2 on boot and on running programmes. I am thinking of not installing ANY security updates, antivirus, or whatever and just using my ATOM 330 with only 2.2 GB on the boot disk. Diabling internet access also allows me to disable a host of Services. (probably get down to 10 or less).
Any advice based on experience?
For the time being, I am not going cMP

Good for you fred. Finally heading down the right path!
I only run sp3 on the non audio pc, and IIRC the boot drive can be even smaller once you do the cmp os tweaks and yes less than 10 is easy. IIRC I think I had like 7 or 8 going on the audio rig.
No, I am going my own path, backed by resaoning and iteration. I also do major hardware mods.
If cics's recommendations appear cogent, I will try it. If not, why should anyone.
I do not diable my PC like you appear to want to do, on blind faith?

Hey Fred,
No, I am going my own path, backed by resaoning and iteration. I also do major hardware mods.
Ok Fred. Think what you want. BUt FWIW, cics has recommended xp sp2 and disabling internet for 2 plus years now. He also has repeatedly been talking about disabling services and getting the numbers down lower than 10. Many have done significant hardware mods and added to his recipe. Cics has acknowledged this many times.
Perhaps we are approaching things from a different viewpoint. I am results oriented with my pc audio and I dont care where I have to beg borrow or steal info from if it gets me a better sound.
Look, I get following your own path, trust me I do. But I spent a lot of time dicking around getting decent results but nowhere near as good as I could have. So forgive me if I want to save others time and congratulate them when they get things right.
If cics's recommendations appear cogent, I will try it. If not, why should anyone.
Because they work. As a whole, his recommendations lead to better sound whether they appear cogent or not. And Fred if one went only by what appears cogent, then we certainly wouldnt have those big Amarra threads where people argue quite nicely that all players sound the same or they must not be bit perfect. Yet you know that that isnt true. Imagine if you refused to try a new player because them sounding better didnt seem cogent.
I for one am trying to save you time.

But actually you did disable them on blind faith didnt you? See I remember you posting about not needing to disable services that werent running while audio was being played. Yet here you are Fred flying in the face of what is cogent. Remarkable.
I guess you figured out that "blind faith" was just smoke on your part. All of his optimizations are 100% reversible. No faith required. Disable something and then listen if you want. Or, have a hdd without the optimizations and one with. Then boot with one and listen, then boot with the other and listen. Fairly simple to test. And prudent since there is a need for a good backup strategy when disabling devices and services.

Hmm. YOu ask a question about one of the major tenants of cics memory player, namely using xp, disabling internet, not running antivirus, and getting a minimum number of services running. I congratulate you and mention that you can get your os footprint down significantly and decrease the number of services. And you accuse me of polluting the discussion! Incredible!
Fred you really should go into politics.
I went from SP2 to SP3 based on segers comments. With cMP2 I believe we have 12 or 13 services in Task Manager.
I did not hear any difference when going from 2 to 3.
RayBan
I was observing that XP SP3 was slightly easier to customize a la cics than SP2, e.g., quicker to process changes to services, but no SQ difference when all is done.
Also, I've always used a separate disk to install XP SP3 as a whole package. I wouldn't upgrade an SP2 system to SP3 via Microsoft updates.
