In Reply to: RE: Juli@ .979 driver uninstall/1.04 install posted by theob on September 29, 2008 at 06:02:51
Next time, save the drivers in a folder in a convenient place.
For now, just go to Device Manager and uninstall the 2 Julia devices listed, then go to system32 folder and delete the Julia files (as per my post), also the 2 files in system32\drivers folder. If they are not there, go ahead and restart, and see if you can install the 1.04 drivers.
I unistalled all juli .979 stuff, saved the juli 1.04 drivers into the c drive, rebooted but there is no 'Found new HW' prompt from windows. So I shut down, took the sound card out of the pci slot, and rebooted then shut down again and reinstalled the juli sound card but when I rebooted again no 'Found new HW' prompt. I tried going into control panel to force a hw install but nothing. What am I doing wrong.
I found a way (in add new hardware in control panel--show all devices) to install new drivers for 1.04 but it somehow doesn't work. I can get the new devices (juliapan and juli driver) to install and show up in device list. I can even see julipan and juli driver under system 32 but I don't get a link to my dac. I tried, retried and kept getting a code 10 error trying to install julipan. I need some assistance/advice on this.
To change soundcard drivers you have to be out of minlogon, and these services have to be put on automatic and started: Event Log, Cryptographic Services, Windows Audio and WMI.
Look again to see that the Julia devices in Device Manager are really gone, and the Julia files in WINDOWS\system32 and WINDOWS\system32\drivers are not there. If the old drivers are really gone, good.
Now restart again and see if the new hardware wizard pops up. If not, try Control Panel > Add hardware. Follow the steps and you should eventually end up in the familiar New Hardware wizard.
I know how to get services restarted but I do not know how to get out of minlogon. Is it just a mattaer of renaming winlogon.bak to winlogon.exe and vice versa for current winlogon (rename to minlogon)?
Very important to get this right:
1. Start button > Run - type regedit and click ok. Navigate to this location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
2. Delete “Config” line for minlogon: (Right-click on Config and delete)
3. Rename winlogon.exe in system32 folder to minlogon.exe
4. Rename winlogon.exe.bak to winlogon.exe
5. Restart.
well I thought I followed your instructions but when I restarted I got '...a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down ...start up in safe mode...' yikes I really screwed up now!
May be necessary to start from scratch. But if you can get into Windows in Safe Mode, all is not yet lost - while booting repeatedly press F8 and select Safe Mode in the list that appears. If you get in you can look for the problem. I was assuming you had previously unticked the box in Folder options > View tab: "Hide extensions for known file types" - this could cause confusion when renaming files if it was ticked.
could not safe start, I guess this is a windows reload, start from scratch process. Is this correct?
It's a do-over. Once I forgot to delete the Config line and this happened. It may also have to do with the attempted driver upgrade while in minlogon. All system changes, software/hardware installations should be done in normal XP. My mistake was to assume you knew this - I should have mentioned it at the beginning - sorry!
you have nothing to be sorry for. I did minlogon initially I knew about extensions of file names. I should have left well enough alone with .979 driver and cplay 1.1 (which did not drop UI). It's my fault buddy and part of the rite to passage, I guess. But why did it have to happen the day the stock market crashed, normally I would listen to music to make myself feel better. Well as some philosopher said what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
The rebuilds get quicker and less stressful the more you do! Good luck with the next one, and keep a list of all the steps and tweaks - it makes it easier.
what about on the back side of this?
ok thanks
