Hi Mac-folks.
I was just told, that iTunes7 introduced a new 24bit mixer.
It wouldn't be possible to pass this mixer by any longer.
This would potentially mean - no bit-perfect output possible.
The workoround which was mentioned: Use an Airport Express
for bit-perfect output.
Can anybody around here confirm this? Are there any workarounds?

SC,
Wrong... first off there is no mixer in iTunes. There is a mixer in CoreAudio. This uses 32 floating point just like vista does. As Thomas has pointed out the Vista stuff for bit perfect here is the MAC side. As long as one application is using the mixer then it is bit perfect.
In CoreAudio you can write and application and "HOG" the device thereby assuring that CoreAudio will not allow another application to effect the stream from the main application.
SC, there is no reason in iTunes to have a mixer. What's it going to mix??? All audio data in a MAC as well as PC is done with 32 floating point. Why would they implement a 24 bit anything?
Thanks

so, may i assume, itunes on mac and vista, will reproduce everything just like a cd player if i rip my music in lossless format?
my vista machine, when connected to my receiver via usb, send pcm 48 signal to my receiver. why?
Thanks. I was just about to ask, "what mixer?"
Do you have the link to this info?
Please check out http://www.computeraudiophile.com/reference_recordings_hrx_review?page=2 for some discussion on bit perfect and how to test it using HDCD decoders.
Here we go.
From a guy who designed a very nice DAC.
