Yes, it will break in, it can take a couple of weeks. What cables are you using? This can affect sound quality.Also, different music players sound different, some sound harsh.

You are using the right player. We make our own cables for it. Zoalla makes an improved cable that's pretty nice.Give it time.
I disagree with fmak about the opamps and output capacitors, both are superior to what's in most DACs. You can remove the output capacitors, but of course it voids the warranty, and makes it less stable with certain outputs. Lynx has done a lot of research and listening to the output caps and the op-amps in this design.

If Lynx has spent time on output electronics, why do they then supply such cheap cables to use with them?

I am using J. River Media Center 11. So far I cannot make it work with Windows Media Player. It burps and chirps. I am using the stock cables into an rca silver lace interconnect via an adaptor. What cables do you recomend?

Your output opamps and coupling cap probably contribute to the sound.
Change them if you can. Sound cards use pretty cheap and not very good stuff. There is no point in using an expensive cable until you sort the output electronics out.
