So I'm setting up a mac mini for my admittedly mid-fi system. Have heard itunes > BitPerfect > USB dac and the difference (with and without BitPerfect) is real. Is there an issue with getting the output from Tidal to the dac without the mac messing with it? I mean I'm paying $25/month for HiFi Tidal. I would hate to think it is getting up or down sampled prior to the dac.
Whatever sounds good...do that.
Follow Ups:
via USB at whatever bit rate you set in 'Audio MIDI Setup'.
You can up-sample if you like. I hear no difference when up-sampling Lossless FLAC streaming services.
Yes, iTunes with Bit Perfect is every bit as good as most expensive players and BETTER than ROON!
I pay $19.99 for TIDAL (16/44.1) and I don't believe I have a special deal.
Mac messing with it? Whatever computer you use it's going to 'mess with' whatever audio you put thru it.If Tidal is truly streaming 16/44.1, set Audio MIDI setup to 44.1. Or, you can possibly use Pure Music or Audirvana Plus which may 'mess with it' more to your liking. ;-)
Look to Audirvana Plus as well as Pure Music.
Pure Music
Audio Streaming Support with Pure Music's "Streamthrough" feature (included in Pure Music since 2011) which permits conveniently playing and enhancing other computer audio sources (Spotify, Qobuz, YouTube, iTunes Radio Internet audio streams, movies, etc.) through Pure Music, with full access to Pure Music's dithered volume control, 64 bit crossover, audio EQ plug-ins, NetSend streaming, metering, etc., all without needing to quit Pure Music.

I'm just trying to bypass processing in the computer completly and get a bit perfect feed to my external DAC. BitPerfect (the plugin) allows me to do that for iTunes, but not sure how to ensure for Tidal.
Whatever sounds good...do that.

Audirvana Plus and Pure Music will also send data 'bit perfect' to your DAC. They -should- also work with Tidal but I have no personal experience with Tidal.
As for BitPerfect, maybe it has been improved over the years but when I tried it, it would lockup now and then on my system so I tossed it out. My next music player was Pure Music and then Audirvana Plus. I presently use Roon which supports Tidal (but again, I'm not subscribed to Tidal).
Thanks ABE! You are the third vote for pure music. I need to get familiar with the interface. It also has to be fairly user friendly for the wife.
Whatever sounds good...do that.
BTW,both Pure Music and Audirvana Plus can co-exist with iTunes. This means you interact with your music library through the iTunes interface but AV+ or PM handles the audio processing and sample rate switching. So you if like iTunes and are already familiar with it, you can still use AV+ or PM.
Nice! Mac Mini finally showed up so I am setting it up as we speak. Pure Music seems like my best bet. Much better option than BitPerfect and much more reasonably priced than its next closest competitor.
Whatever sounds good...do that.
I just bought a MacBook myself, still trying to figure it out. I did buy Audirvana and the A+ remote, it supports tidal directly and I think you can bypass Mac drivers with their own audio system, making it pure .., I am not sure what the sounds Apple menu does. there is also something called Roon. Roon for Mac,
