We really like the Sonos for its convenience and built it up to whole house over about 4-5 years. Its worth it.
The streaming services make it the right sort of radio, and it passes the "good enough" test for that and in fact it the best of its kind.
I hear with an Amazon Echo, it'll soon have voice control. That will be one killer combination...

It plays all the CDs and vinyl that I have ever purchased from Amazon as well as other music. It's OK. The audio quality from the Echo Dot is not as good as the Amazon Music app from my iPhone. So it's not the quality of the stream but the quality of the 3.5mm analog out from the Echo Dot. Of course, I wouldn't use it as a primary music source but I thought I would see what it sounds like. It's better suited for other information like the weather, my news brief, bedside alarm, turn other gadgets on/off, etc. Fun toy!

@ Abe
If I hook the DOT up like yours to my stereo can I get another DOT for another area of the house and control the stereo from the other room ? the other room has speakers wired to where my stereo is.
The Echo does not control the stereo. It simply provides a 3.5mm jack so it's audio output can be fed to the stereo. Or you can pair it to wireless bluetooth speakers. You can have more than one Echo or Echo Dot combination in your home. We also have the Remote Control for the Echo Dot that you can speak into. Additionally it has a Play/Pause button, volume up/down, and skip forward/back. I put the Echo Dot in the family room today so my wife can play whatever music she likes. Instead of yelling across the room to the Echo Dot over loud music, she can speak into the Remote. "Play soft Rock", "Play Smooth Jazz", etc. It works great if you have an Amazon Prime account which gives you free access to Amazon Prime Music.
We have the larger Echo in the bedroom and the small hockey puck sized Echo Dot in the family room connected to the stereo.
You need wifi and typically a smartphone to initially setup the Echo and enable/disable features and 'skills'. Or you can use your web browser on your PC/Mac.

wow Abe, you get all the cool toys, so much so I was jealous! Very cool video, thanks for the demo.
I ordered one, looking forward to it. I see I can order pizza with it using a Dominos app for it :) even just for that it is worth it, LOL!
I must have 500 albums on amazon cloud I bought, pretty cool to hear them in the kitchen even if it sounds like a tin can. I also see a pandora app as well as tune-in internet radio.
You can drive an integrated amp with the Echo via 3.5mm to RCA cable, or paired to a bluetooth speaker. It didn't sound great in my main setup but with the right amplified speakers, bluetooth or otherwise it might be OK. I think it is designed (tuned?) for more typical consumer speakers.
I have the original tall Amazon Echo as well with built-in larger speaker. It actually sounds pretty good for casual background music from a corner of the room. But I use it mostly for news or asking stupid questions like 'Alexa, are you smarter than Siri'?
I got it today, got another one coming.the built in speaker sounds great for the kitchen.
signed up for amazon unlimited music for $3.99 a month for the echo dot.
I'm putting the other one in the bedroom for an alarm.

I wish there were a way to make the iPhone's Siri converse (argue?) with Alexa on the Echo. ;-)
Have fun!
I'm thinking about the Amazon echo and the Amazon unlimited I think it is $5 a month for unlimited music on the echo, I might get it also you can get the switches to turn outlets on and off with voice. My coworker turns on his BMW with the echo I believe he said that to me he does that.It would be cool stuff to get Sonos control on the echo as well.
You speak of wife, maybe the echo will have a virtual wife app too, lol! What's her name she responds by on the echo? Alexa?

Sonos is partnering with Amazon to integrate it with each other. We'll see where it goes, but this makes a lot of sense.
We use echo + Philips Hue + Wink to be able to turn on an off lights with voice control, it seems to work pretty well thus far.
Did you know that the Sonos Play:5 latest version has built in microphones that are just waiting for the firmware to activate them? (we don't own the latest Play:5, but might if it becomes an extension for Amazon Echo!)
