I think you may want to consider a convertor that is self-powered over one using the USB 5V line. From what I have been reading, it is a good idea to not overdo the USB 5V power requirements going through the MR to keep it from overheating. I had the W4S uLink and recall it had a sound signature more to the dark side of the spectrum, which would possibly play well with a DAC that is bright.. but there must be some other options on the used market due to how folks are seeming to change these DDC's quite often (I have had at least 6 myself)...

If he has a good linear PS for the uRendu then going from the uRendu to a USB > S/PDIF converter then to the S/PDIF input to his older non-USB DAC is really not a problem. In fact the USB > S/PDIF converter would love the clean power from the uRendu via its linear supply

For the money the F-1 XMOS USB Digital Interface Module XU208 U8 can not be beaten with CRYSTEK 'femto' clocks, etc. I have heard this converter used with the uRendu and it is just the ticket.

The potential issue with drawing +5V VBUS power from the mRendu USB port to power a USB to S/PDIF converter is not the quality of the power, but rather the amount of current that the USB to S/SPDIF converter will draw from the mRendu's internal regulator. The additional current draw will create additional heat.
I have the W4S uLink on order with an outboard power source - so the uLink will not be drawing it's power from the mRendu USB port.
Depending on how you power the uRendu.
As mentioned, I have heard this setup fed by the uRendu running off of a TeraDak LPS and it works and sounds great.
I think we're talking about two different things. There are several great power supplies out there that will work fine and sound great on the mRendu. That's not what is in question here.
The additional 150mA load from the uLink USB to S/PDIF converter will produce extra heat within the mRendu if the uLink is powered from the mRendu's USB port. Sure it will work fine, sure it will sound great, and sure it will produce additional heat. The tiny mRendu already runs on the warm side whether powered by 6v, 7v, or 9v. I've tried it.
I will run the uLink from an external DC source rather than via the mRendu's USB port +5V VBUS completely eliminating concerns for additional heat dissipation from the mRendu.
P.S. It has to do with input voltage vs output voltage and the voltage drop across the mRendu voltage regulators and the amount of current being passed thru those regulators. That voltage drop multiplied by current is what produces the wasted heat. More current drawn on the mRendu's USB port = more heat. So rather than powering the uLink via the mRendu's USB, I'll power it with it's own DC source.
"The other consideration is what current a VBUS powered DAC uses. If your DAC uses the full 0.5A from the VBUS, the VBUS regulator in the microRendu will be generating a lot of heat, this could cause overheating depending on how much ventilation your microRendu gets."
At 150ma you are no where near the 'full 0.5A' from the VBUS.

Either way will work and yes the mRendu will handle it but less heat is better than more heat.At 9v the mRendu is already drawing ~200mA and dissipating 1.8 watts which doesn't sound like a lot but the case gets quite warm. Pulling an additional 150mA off the +5V VBUS will add an additional .6 watts or 33% more heat. More heat that isn't necessary.
In any case, I am choosing to run the uLink off it's own external DC source, a source that I already own so it's not like an additional expense.
