At the suggestion that Aurender will replace the hard drives in the unit with SSDs for a price, I contacted one of the dealers.
First response:
"Our price sheet does not show this option. I will be contacting Aurender and will let you know as soon as I get an answer."
Follow up response quoted from Aurender:
"The W20 uses dual 3.5" HDDs to store the music file library, but plays back files using a 240GB SSD caching drive. SSDs are not manufactured in a 3.5" size and therefore cannot be employed in the vault that holds the drives in a W20. SSD drives are also of dubious value in the Aurender. Since we already cache and playback from an SSD, the HDDs that store the files experience little wear and tear. When albums are selected they simply startup and load the cache drive and then go idle. "
Not surprising given the source.

You have shown a history or reading comprehension issues, but in this case it may have been my fault.I NEVER meant they will replace the internal HDD drives in the unit with SSD drives. I MEANT they will NOT install them, and ship them with JUST the SSD drive used for memory buffer. For our purposes we do not store music on the internal drive. Is that clear?
And why do you care? You have zero intention of purchasing one. Which qualifies your thread as trolling.
And you bet the system sounds damn good.

Here's your comments:
Who said my unit has any hard drives?...Aurender is more than willing to customize the product at additional cost in this regard.
Additional cost to leave the drives out? Are you serious?
For our purposes we do not store music on the internal drive.
So, you have modified it to access content from a network or a NAS instead of the internal "vault"?
Nothing you say makes any sense.
on petty issues.
just have no idea how the product works. Nor Aurender for that matter.
Or expect folks to add a Mac server to make NAS access work. Go figure.
Troll Time is over. Take one home from your dealer and have at it.
That is if he does not see you for the tire kicker that you are.
The devil makes use of idle minds....
Again, with the reading comprehension. Network playback is NOT a modification:
"AMM and NAS(Network-Attached Storage) Support
If you already have NAS set-up, the Aurender W20 is able to play music stored on NAS devices.."
Slow down.
So, your company actually paid extra to have the drives left out.
It is really none of your concern.
When using NAS access, it requires a PC for access. Let's look at the details behind that approach :
"If you already have NAS set-up, the Aurender W20 is able to play music stored on NAS devices,
AMM(Aurender Media Manager) software is available for Mac(OS X 10.9 or later) now. Windows version will be available later. .
You can run AMM software on your platform of choice, please specify the location of your content on NAS then it will automatically find the Aurender in you local network and make a combining music database. It's transparent to the user, so once you run AMM , you can select the music with all the meta-data using the Aurender Conductor App without the knowledge of the location of your music files."
Apparently, you've become a Mac fan like Abe. Which model do you use?
...if someone has been blowing smoke all along about his Aurender W20, mRendu, and his Antipodes DX Ref.
I was sincerely hoping that he would post his impressions of the mRendu vs the W20 but was told that would never happen because his mRendu is in another system. Come on, it's not like the mRendu is difficult to move (unless you don't actually own one!). Heck, the thing fits in a shirt pocket. ;-)
does grow longer with each new descriptive installment.
Maybe it's just me paying close attention to details but I swear his story has changed a bit over time.
that with each inconsistency observed, the details morph to accommodate the new story.
And are never backed with any substantiation. Just empty bitterness requiring Midol :)
It is clear that, based on your previous condescending thread title, comments here, you are clearly a misogynist. The Donald would be proud.

You and your boyfriend E-Stat seem to have an very unhealthy obsession with me an quite frankly it is very creepy.Don't you feel ashamed taking a paycheck from your employer since all you do all day is troll the forums? Almost 27,000 posts!!!
I DO NOT take orders from you IT Architect boy. I actually work for a living. What I do with my systems is my bizness. If you want to take pictures of your DAC collection and Mac Mini have at it..

How else would you get information on the Rendu. He is the only source of audio information.
Cut-Throat
..and right on cue comes the third stooge..
so knock off the snarky comments.
You were warned once and I thought that you and I had things sorted out?

OK, maybe has one.
That said, not disagreeing on Aurender's position regarding caching via an SSD drive, but am surprised they did not use a large (16-32 GB) allocation of RAM for that purpose. I am sure they know what sounds best.
....but am surprised they did not use a large (16-32 GB) allocation of RAM for that purpose. I am sure they know what sounds best. The Aurender W20 uses a 240GB SSD for music file caching.
Several possible reasons why they didn't use RAM:
RAM is volatile memory losing all of it's cached data (music files in this case) when the power is shut down. The amount of RAM supported on the smaller passively cooled Mini-ITX computer motherboards* is relatively small. The cost of SSD on a capacity basis is much less expensive than an equivalent amount of RAM. And SSDs do not lose their data (cached music files) when the power is shut off.
*I do know that Aurender uses Intel Atom based Mini-ITX motherboards running the Linux operating system and a separate audio board of their own design. One motherboard brand that they are known to use is made by ASRock. These smaller motherboards have few DIMM slots and don't support a huge amount of memory.

Dealers do have units after all. They also talk to the company .
I heard Brian Walsh's unit while I had business in the Chicago area. System sounded great. Naturally, I like the speakers he used. :)
