think you have summarised the situation well. Icron makes OEM modules for sale to manufacturers and the PS Audio incarnation sounds like one of these. There is actually a single usb version of the one you posted.
Noe of the web material explains what ' Extreme USB' does. In time, explanations should be forthcoming and I shall hold fire until I know what is on offer by whom.
It will be best to audition the PS audio offering prior to buying.
Follow Ups:
These USB extension devices have been around for a number of years now. They range in price and functionality according to their purpose.
The device that I linked to is essentially the only one that will work for OUR application. That isochronous, gigabit LAN device, (although not designed for audio performance), has been shown to sound tremendous by all who've tried it.
The single port model that you mentioned is down the chain, and it is neither gigabit LAN or isochronous. It is not suitable (or even capable) of extending video or audio over gigabit networks.(One note of reference: Icron also had a non-isochronous Gigabit LAN capable extender that used the exact same model number as the isochronous device. It is no longer being sold, but there may be some StarTechs out there, as Icron builds StarTechs).
There is a big difference between exending an USB mouse between 2 conference rooms, and the requirements of hi-Rez (in time), USB audio.
It could be all in how one defines similar, but we are talking an audio only device, here on this audio forum. And certain models, (although they look similar), can damage switches if they are plugged into the LAN.
Yes indeed, they look similar, and in the computing world of extending USB mice & keyboards they are similar: but with high end audio, the differences are more pronounced. And of course, as you have shown many times, it's sometimes the details that make all the difference in SQ.
PSAudio is having Icron build these Lanrovers for them to their specifications. 1 specification is very clear: 1 USB port instead of 4. The other is "other audio specific improvements." At some point, someone is going to reverse engineer the Lanrover and we'll have a better idea of what they are. Do the 2 aforementioned differences between the Icron isochronous & the Lanrover yield different SQ results? We will soon see. There are several people who will be running and comparing both devices soon enough.
Of course I agree that it's a good idea that one should audition these in their own unique setup. But, these are by no means so new that they are an "unknown" entity.

The Icron site is one big confusing array of models with similar numbers.
Good information. Thank you.
I'm not saying it doesn't work. I'm just questioning the marketing behind it and a couple comments you made."PSAudio is having Icron build these Lanrovers for them to their specifications. 1 specification is very clear: 1 USB port instead of 4. The other is "other audio specific improvements."
1) - 1 USB port instead of 4 is pretty easy to do. Just lop off the other 3 USB ports. No engineering involved there.
2) - Audio specific improvements? And what specifically might those be? Who said that, you or PS Audio?
3) - "someone is going to reverse engineer the LANRover". It will never happen. No high-end audio manufacturer has the resources or a good reason to RE the LANRover. Only highly specialized companies have the necessary expertise and equipment to RE an ASIC.
The point was made very clear by Paul McGowan himself in his YouTube video about the LANRover.
1:15 into the video: "It is one of the first products we did not engineer, at all".

Trolling again, when will you be told to stop?
Your post bears no relevance to this discussion and you already have posted elsewhere to the same effect.
...trying to be the moderator?
I had a couple questions and my post is very relevant to this conversation.
It is your constant attempt to moderate that is the trolling annoyance around here.
I shall post what is right.
misinformed "Power PC" thread?
It would be difficult for a company the size of PS Audio to develop their own technology for this application. Although Jeff thought I was way off base bringing this up, the comparisons are relevant.
