I'm currently using my wife's MacBook Pro to stream music of the internet connected to my Counterpoint DAC and I'm very happy with the result. However, it is my wife's computer so I'm looking for an inexpensive laptop with a S/PDIF output. My search is hampered by the fact it seems to be a random feature and they don't seem to list this feature if they have it.
Does anyone know which brands or models have this feature? How much might one cost?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards, Ralph

Hi Jim, good to see you here. Yeah, the Counterpoint still rocks, sounds great now streaming too.
Hope all is well with you.
Best regards, Ralph
I purchased a docking station for my 2007-era Lenovo T61 that included an S/PDIF output. I imagine you could find both on ebay for a pittance these days. I recently updated the T61 with an SSD, 8 gig of ram and win8.1 and it performs close to current laptops. These were very well-made machines and more than adequate to perform streaming.
Is it likely that a Macbook - USB - USB to S/PIDF - DAC will sound better than
Macbook - USB - DAC, if the DAC has both S/PIDF and USB input?
Thank you for your responses, I will look into it.
Best regards, Ralph
Hi !
imhe even a cheap 2nd hand office Dell laptop (150USD) with a decent usb to spdif converter (that you can always keep for the future if you like it) can provide a "nice sounding" digital source.
For instance I bought the one in the link and I am liking its sound.
But the choice is really huge, because the concept is very popular.
Good luck !P.S. I have found that keeping the usb cable short and using a longer spdif coaxial is a good thing. I am using a 2 meter Wireworld that I also like a lot. Everything sounds quite relaxed but detailed.
Quite musical to me.
Kind regards,
bg

As you are talking Mac, I assume you need a Toslink output.
As far as I know all Mac's have an audio jack doubling as Toslink.
Toshiba is an alternative, indeed Toslink was invented by Toshiba
If you go to http://us.toshiba.com/ and search for SPDIF you get a list of models featuring Toslink
Starting at $ 525
Another option is a USB to SPDIF converter. No PC without a USB port :)

the macbook air does not have the combo audio/toslink jack.
