Weird. Most DACs do not require the DAC manufacturer to supply a driver for Linux or Mac OS X. However, according to the ARC DAC8 manual there is a Mac OS driver. They make no mention of Linux, a tweaked version of which is at the heart of the mRendu.
I am inclined to believe it is a driver issue where the mRendu is expecting a DAC that relies on generic Linux drivers but your DAC8 appears to require specialized drivers.
I'm not intimately familiar with Linux USB audio drivers but this would be my educated guess.
The other -possibility- is a defective USB interface in your DAC8 which is highly unlikely but may be worth a try for peace of mind. Have you tried using the DAC8 over USB (on your PC with the ARC supplied driver) just to see if the DAC8 USB interface works?

I installed the drivers on my work laptop and was able to play through the DAC8 just fine. Interestingly, the 48k light came up upon connection.
So, it appears DAC is functioning when presented with its drivers.
At least you know for sure now that it is not your DAC8. It -might- be the need for a specific driver that the mRendu does not have.
Is Jesus the software developer for mRendu? I've seen his name mentioned before but I don't know who he is.

One variable eliminated! Hopefully, there is a workaround. Also, tried old configuration of using the EDO enhanced Touch USB output to the DAC8. Didn't work there either. I upgraded a DAC7 to the DAC8 because the former didn't support anything above 44.1. Silly me - I thought that a newer version would work "better" and still provide the exceptional audio quality of the balanced JFET output.

I believe that is the case. He and John Swenson interact and respond on the Sonore forum over at CA.
I hope there's a fix or a good workaround for your setup with the mRendu. If not, I'm guessing that they will take it back for a refund? Or, maybe it's time for you to buy a shiny new DAC. ;-)
If you haven't already, just for grins you might try your DAC8 via USB directly to your PC with the ARC driver and see if that works.
That is not possible given the two live on different floors of the house! They are attached via a 60' CAT6 cable that goes from the router in the office up through the built in bookshelves into the attic and across into what is essentially a second level bedroom.
I can, however, reconfigure the Touch (with EDO) to use USB output. I once tried that with the DAC7 and found no advantage, but it worked. I guess I should do that to ensure the ARC isn't at fault.
Your DAC8 is simply not supported by Linux and therefore microRendu cannot output to your DAC. If you put in between a USBtoSPDIF device, you may.
I had emailed ARC service and got the reply yesterday. Dang! They made all the to do about the gee whiz 480 Mbps USB 2.0 capability that the previous one lacked. But it still worked with the Touch.
I placed an order for an Audiophilio converter. Hopefully, I'll be able to actually audition the uRendu soon.
The waiting must be killing you! Hope your converter arrives soon. ;-)
Do you know if the Audiophilio converter is compatible with the uRendu?

Yes!!! Unit shipped today. Tonight, I'll be listening to the Touch via the new HD-Plex power supply for a more consistent comparison. It offers several voltage outputs (including a dedicated 5V port) and came with a gaggle of different connectors.

Philip seems to think so and offers a 30 day trial.
