Antipodes DS Reference - I have an opportunity to buy one at nearly the dealers cost. Still, it's a substantial purchase. So far I've heard/read only good things about this server. Am I doing the right thing? Are there better options? Please give me a reason not to buy one.

Is your DAC at the same level of quality, or do you plan to upgrade it?

Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
Isn't Antipodes already equipped with high quality DAC? I understand it's a stand alone unit.

Turns out Antipodes DS has its own built-in DAC and analogue out. Maybe you were referring to an earlier model?
I guess I got it all wrong - I thought it was a discrete stand-alone unit with disc burner and all that would replace my macmini...
Hi Ed,
Hope you and Bruce are doing well.
Man if you wanted a stand alone unit there was just a Sony HAP-Z1 on the trader at a grand. People can say what they will, but for that price nothing can touch it. Sometimes the seller leaves their music on it. Hi res and all. (I don't need any lectures.)
If you don't like that, then I'd say put all your money in the best DAC you can afford, and use the mini as the server. If you want a nice server check out Little Green Machines, same features as the Anitpodes. The micro Rendu they have been talking about can be used with an external HD as a local server, and I bet it matches the Antipodes. Just don't put the cart before the horse.
Back in March a TotalDac came up on the gon for half the retail price. I had told myself I would immediately buy one if I saw it at that price, but I couldn't pull the trigger the first time I saw the ad, and when I worked up the nerve it was sold. I should have filed my tax return earlier. I'm still regretting that. Thanks for the shoulder.
