Hi !
thanks a lot indeed for the very helpful advice.
Actually it works !
I have downloaded the Synology Audio Station app and found a usb device compatible.
The sound is not bad at all. I will try any other usb dac i have at hand.
I am afraid i have to stick with this Audio Station app for files playback.
Thanks a lot indeed.
Kind regards,
bg

There are a lot of audio players for Linux but installation on the NAS might be a bit troublesome unless you are fluent in Linux.
Maybe the NAS is not only a DLNA server but also a DLNA renderer.
If that is the case any DLNA control point can be used as a application for playback e.g. UPNPlay on Android phone or MusicBee on PC, etc.

Hi ! thanks a lot for the very kind support.
Zero of Linux and any other sw here ... i am extremely ignorant.
I have to study a little more the DLNA topic.
However i do not see the usb dac in audio devices in the win 7 pc control panel like i hoped.
I have to study. The sound is not bad actually.
Thanks a lot again.

Assuming you expect a USB DAC attached to a NAS to show up as an audio device in Win, the answer is no. It doesn't work that way.
If the NAS is running DLNA, it should popup in Win explorer as a media device.
In DLNA control point you can choose it as a renderer (if it supports this)
Maybe this page makes it a bit less unclear:

The Well Tempered Computer
Hi again !
to sum up ... when in Win explorer I click on network the nas (DiskStation) appears.
If I click on the nas I see the folders in the nas I can access the files.
I tried to right click on the nas but I saw nothing about setting it as a
media device.
I guess it is not possible to use it as a renderer ?
If I understand well a renderer is a peripheral that I can use also as audio out ?
Is this renderer approach the right one ?
For instance, is the Sonore mRendu a renderer ?
Thanks a lot again.
Kind regards,

In Win Explorer open Network
You should see the NAS (the file server)
You should also see Multimedia Devices
Your own PC is probably one of them as Win by default has DLNA on
If you don't see the NAS you should probably start a DLNA service e.g. start Media Server or Minim.
After a while it should be listed as a Multimedia Device.
A renderer is indeed the one that plays.
The Sonore is one of them.
But as you can play directly on the NAS, it might be a renderer too.

Hi !
thanks a lot again for the very kind and valuable support.
I will try soon this evening. I am very curious to listen.
It seems that the renderer concept, when properly implemented, can provide excellent sound indeed.
Thanks a lot again.

Hi !
thanks again and i will study the link for sure.
However
" f the NAS is running DLNA, it should popup in Win explorer as a media device "
i see the nas with explore but what means "media device" ?
i see it as an external hd with the various folders
" In DLNA control point you can choose it as a renderer (if it supports this) "
i cannot find the DNLA control point.
" Maybe this page makes it a bit less unclear:
http://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/SW/Android/MediaPlayers/UpnPlay.htm "
i will read and try to understand something but it is difficult for me.
However i am not so sure i will get a better sound than from usb ports on pc. It seems to me quite a similar situation.
Thanks a lot again.
Kind regards,
bg
