In Reply to: RE: PCM - DSD Conversion On PS Audio NuWave DSD Possibilities. posted by el34eh@yahoo.com on July 03, 2016 at 16:27:39
The NuWave DSD DAC does not internally convert PCM to DSD. It handles everything in it's native format and will play DSD over PCM (DoP) depending on how your player software is setup.BTW, I love the way this DAC sounds so much that I recently sold my Ayre QB-9 DSD DAC. Both are excellent. The PS Audio is actually slightly more to my liking and it costs less.
I don't use JRiver but I have used Audirvana Plus, and presently using Roon. In both Audirvana Plus and Roon there are software settings for how to handle DSD playback. Assuming you're going over USB choose "DSD over PCM" (DoP), and that should work.
I have it setup that way in Roon and it seamlessly switches modes when it encounters a DSD file, and it illuminates the DSD LED on my NuWave DSD DAC.
I am not presently running Audirvana Plus but below is a screen shot from Audirvana Preferences > Audio System. Under the Native DSD pull-down menu try Automatic first. See if that works. If not, try DSD over PCM 1.0, or DSD over PCM 1.1. You may need to quit then relaunch AV+ for your changes to take effect. Also, my version of Audirvana Plus may be older than yours but the general idea is the same.
As for Audio Midi Setup, it's not necessary to set the sample rate to any specific value as these players will do that for you. However, you do want to Right-Click on the PS Audio DAC then choose "Use this Device for Sound Output". Additionally, Right-Click on Built-in Output and choose "Play alerts and sound effects through this device". This is a nice feature as system sounds will go to the Macs internal speaker while your music alone goes through your DAC.
Example AV+ screen shot for setting up how it handles DSD
My NuWave DSD DAC playing back a DSD file. Select USB with the front panel buttons.
The DSD LED will illuminate automatically when the DAC encounters a DSD file. You do not
manually choose DSD with the buttons on the DAC front panel.

Got hooked by Roon Abe?
As many are discovering, it's far more than music reviews.
Steve,
Yes, I am enjoying Roon and I take back what I said several months ago about not seeing the value in Roon. Indeed it is much more than an aggregation of pictures, reviews, and other metadata. I'm really starting to like it.
I also like the fact that the development team is constantly updating it with useful features, bug fixes, and enhancements. Roon Bridge is also a fairly recent development that none of the reviews covered because it just became available a few months ago. Same for Roon Bridge on Linux including Linux on the ARM A7/A8 processor (Raspberry Pi and others).
The fact that it integrates well with Tidal & HQPlayer are other benefits that I'd like to explore soon.
My AQ Jitterbug came with a promo code for a Roon 60-day trial so I'm taking advantage of that now. I was hoping to try Tidal as well but news broke just last week that Apple may be buying Tidal. I may still give it a go on a month to month basis and see how things shake out.
Happy 4th Steve!
I'll be exploring Roon Bridge soon. Happy 4th to you Abe!
Good morning Abe,
And thanks for taking the time to respond to this inquiry, as well as adding the extra insight on how these actual DACs preform said task. On the older version, I was merely using it a an example of how to excess the settings just for the sake of it, as I'm aware that the current version runs things somewhat differently........., yet I've to add is a wonderful sounding DAC on its own merits, and going back through your journey last night........, was a pleasant read to say the less.
And like you........, I believe it's a keeper as well, yet fail to understand why more music lovers aren't using one?, as I too find it extremely well balanced in what I hear as a very organic manner.
Thanks again......., and by all means........, write on, as I find it all very education, and very insightful.
Lastly......., have a safe and joyous Holiday.
