Seems like a good way to DIY one's own microRendu of sorts, w or w/o built-in DAC for much less $$. I think I've seen some "Roon ready" implementations but haven't read up on it. Thanks.

You'll be much more flexible with such a "DIY" solution.
There are numerous people out there using that stuff.
You'll find a community driven and supported evolution.
IMO no need to buy any commercial streamer.
Beside that SW support and evolution for these commercial solutions
will be frozen sooner as you think. There'll be no budget to keep
support up for years.
And Roon -- who needs that??
Svensson of course turns every stone to deliver an audio device par excellence from an electronics perspective.
However above still applies. I wouldn't ever consider to buy such a device.
I might borrow one just to see where I'm at with my solution. And I bet I'll be not much off track with my solution.
No one "needs" it but I'm warming up to Roon after playing around with it for the past couple weeks. Having a DIY "Roon ready" streamer might be fun to dink around with. The fact that it's been ported to ARM / Linux is kinda cool.
