I bought an assembled pi dac (Pi2 ModelB) on eBay. It must be the candidate for worst instructions ever. Having spent some time on the web I found it stiull pretty difficult to find which pugs are for waht. My problem is somewhat compounded by the builder having either poor english skills (apologies to those of you in this situation) or poor knowledge of termiology. Would anyone have alink to coherent guide?
I have tried downloading the web interface but I just keep ending up at the max2play site, with no mention of the interface
So nothing working yet

Hi.
1. If that's an IQAudio DAC there are very well written instructions on the IQAudio site.
2. Depending on the OS Image (Moode/Volumio/Rune/PiCorePlayer) you use, check their setup and operations instructions.
In case of questions check their forums.
All of those images are pretty much up2date regarding HAT DAC drivers. A certain driver you obviously have to select during the setup.
Beside that you need to configure what music data source you want to use.
3. Assembling the HW and hooking up a USB power supply should be a no-brainer. That can be accomplished by a 5 year old.
I keep the fingers crossed that you didn't buy a broken unit.
At these low price levels I'd stay away from used boards anyhow.
Good luck.
Do all of the Pi-DACs over HAT use I2S?
Yes. They all run I2S.
There are different implementations and drivers though.
E.g. the Hifiberry DAC+ Pro uses its own quality clocks and slaves the PI.
Currently MamboBerry and Audiophonics PI DAC V3 seem to be the HAT DACs of "plug'n play" choice.
AT around 200$ (PI, DAC, iPower PS, case, SD card) you'll get a pretty decent streamer incl. DAC.
If you want to spent an extra $50 you can add a 2nd power supply to have PI and DAC PS separated.
If you want to spent more and don't demand HAT, you can buy A Soekris I2S R2R DAC ($280+transformer) which comes with I2S isolator and reclocker.
But to get this going it'll require a bit more DIY efforts. Still manageable though. (Consider what you'll save on USB filter gadgets alone!")
Enjoy.
Seems like a good way to DIY one's own microRendu of sorts, w or w/o built-in DAC for much less $$. I think I've seen some "Roon ready" implementations but haven't read up on it. Thanks.

You'll be much more flexible with such a "DIY" solution.
There are numerous people out there using that stuff.
You'll find a community driven and supported evolution.
IMO no need to buy any commercial streamer.
Beside that SW support and evolution for these commercial solutions
will be frozen sooner as you think. There'll be no budget to keep
support up for years.
And Roon -- who needs that??
Svensson of course turns every stone to deliver an audio device par excellence from an electronics perspective.
However above still applies. I wouldn't ever consider to buy such a device.
I might borrow one just to see where I'm at with my solution. And I bet I'll be not much off track with my solution.
No one "needs" it but I'm warming up to Roon after playing around with it for the past couple weeks. Having a DIY "Roon ready" streamer might be fun to dink around with. The fact that it's been ported to ARM / Linux is kinda cool.
You have to be in to that sort of thing to get it to work. Familiar with Computers, DIY Projects etc. - It's not 'Turnkey'.

Hmmh. You seem to be the expert here.
Mounting a HAT DAC on a PI is a no-brainer. Even for those with two left hands (or two right for left-hander).
And that's pretty much all of "DIY" work to be accomplished.
Pretty much all HAT DACs I came across have drivers available on most popular images.
Loading and configuring a well prepared Audio image, such as Moode, Volumio, Rune or PiCorePLayer is pretty straight forward and doesn't require any Linux knowledge. All of them are 100% browser based distributions.
Loading and configuring a Windows system plus tweaking it for good sound means ten times the effort.
Enjoy.
No expert here! --- But I do know that you are an expert, and I appreciate the efforts you put into the Squeezebox Touch..... The people I am talking about are hard pressed to throw a switch, and when they are faced with dealing with something that looks like this, they check out immediately. So that is what I meant.
