If you have to mess around with embedded devices to get going, I guess you're better off sticking with LapTops. But please -- don't call them audiophile!
They'll do a job and that's about it.
Enjoy.

I meant the OS is audiophile.
I had an issue, the dev told me it underclocks the processor to below 1ghz so I have to fiddle with the power settings for the processor when doing upsample past DSD 64. Lucky it is web based and all settings are a tap of the button on a tablet or whatever.
I haven't built any audio machines since I was messing with VIA chipsets a few years ago, maybe a decade. I remember when there was no PC Audio forum here.
I can't afford to get into pissing contests at this point.
One of the better if not best sounding rooms at the 2015 California Audio Show and notice what's on the third shelf down?
It's a stock Acer laptop sitting on isolation pucks with just an after market PS (so as not to introduce noise in the rest of the system).
The Bricasti is a wonderful sounding DAC-even with a laptop :)
Even using an external linear power supply for the laptop doesn't stop the computer from contaminating the AC that feeds the other components. A good filter like Shunyata builds would be more helpful in my opinion.
are on the AC lines at a hotel during a show! =:-0
So, a good aftermarket power supply does more for sound quality than an "optimized" computer does?
But I heard Brian Zolner's system at two shows last year playing DSD files from a ACER? laptop pictured in the above post(San Francisco and Denver) and it was a GREAT sounding system.
His claim was not mods to the laptop except the external supply and the footers.
Software? I have no idea but he was controlling the laptop from his phone
I'll ask if I see him at RMAF later this year.
But what to expect from MEGA-BUCK speakers and amps plus his very expensive gold plated DAC?
Aah. You've been on a show. Great. Obviously you learned a lot.
Thx for letting us know.
I even got married at CES/T.H.E. in 2007. =:-0
Oh, and about a half dozen MEDICA at your local Messe as well!
Next time you're at Medica.
You're invited to a private audio show. ;) It's just 10 minutes from the DUS airport.
Lived in the 'Rhineland' with a view on the 'Siebengebirge' in the 90's. Wife worked at the 'Uni' clinic in Dusseldorf. Still have friends in the 'Neandertal'.
