If you must convert your files with a "lossy compression" format, you might try AAC instead of MP3 unless you need MP3 specifically. Many people find that AAC sounds better at a given bitrate. In other words, AAC at 320kbps will sound better than MP3 at 320kbps to most people.
Just curious, why do you need to convert to MP3?
Clients request in addition to wav file. I do location recording. I never got into iTunes or portable digital players. I did a comparison between wav and mp3 years ago and the difference was very obvious to me. My editing software had a limited amount of times to convert wav. to mp3 and I used it up.
