In Reply to: RE: Doesn't 2L record in DXD? How did they settle on the MQA Sample rate? posted by PAR on April 27, 2016 at 21:27:55
John Atkinson said MQA is PCM only, in response to a post here.
Allan said MQA is 24/44 or 24/48.
I'll read the Link you provided, thanks.
I hope I haven't started an argument here...

In MQA the 24/44.1 or 24/48 or whatever rate file is just the "wrapper" for delivery which contains a file at the rates up to those in my earlier posting. The original file is recovered when decoded.

The "original file" (whatever the original master was) is not recovered from the decoded MQA. That would be mathematically impossible if the original file was at a higher resolution than 44/24 or 48/24, since there would not be enough bits. Rather, a "lossy" version of the original file is recovered.
There is some marketing hype that MQA can be better than the original file itself. If you believe that, there's a bridge in Brooklyn you can purchase. Of course if you compare an MQA version made from one master with a different master file (or CD downsample thereof) you may discover that the difference in mastering is 100x greater than any format differences.

I wonder if you really understand what MQA is and does? Or. at least, what the claim is. I did provide a link in an earlier post in this thread.
There is no claim at all about MQA being better than the original file. There is a claim about an MQA file drawn from the master being better than the CD or other format previously issued to the consumer however.
At this point I feel a need to use the usual disclaimers. I am not connected in any way. shape or form to MQA or its progenitors, manufacturers or promoters and have no interest aside from general debate.
MQA is supposed to take you ahead of the ADC used to produce the digital master . I understand MQA very well. Alan
Said distribution was problematical ( my paraphrase...),
but I've had no problem with DSD 128 Downloads.
Anyway, it's good to see something new.
Wouldn't be surprised if it surprises us.
I hope content will be both Downloads and Streaming.
Seems like Steaming Quality could be way better than now.
Will know as soon as Tidal starts streaming in MQA. Supposed to happen soon
Alan
That is correct I think. The fact that it is 24/44 or 24/48 with a low bitrate is what allows the MQA file to be streamed
