Your input is appreciated on this. I just finished my first serious foray into computer-served audio. Great stuff. I now have some familiarity with it.
I went through the J. River trial period, now it's over. I liked it a lot, and there are some useful features that I didn't get to try. What I'm considering is whether I should pay for an annual subscription. I don't consider the cost especially onerous.
I've been using other library/players - Foobar, Windows Media Player, RealTimes, iTunes (though I'm not an Apple/Mac user). Foobar has some serious audio/playback controls, but the user interface/experience to me isn't great. It's a useful, effective tool, which is great, and not a great experience to use.
One feature that I haven't tried myself, though I've used in a couple of audio shops is the J. River server, where I could view the library and control play remotely through a tablet computer (can it be done via a smartphone?). This would be marvelous. I didn't try this with my trial. Can Foobar do this?
Thanks.

"Can Foobar do this?"
Hi,
I'm dipping my toes into PC audio too for the first time this year.. I plan to try the link below first..
I hope it works out, and sounds decent at least.
Hi,
You can also go to the Pono Music website (or J-River Forum - link below) and download Pono Music World.
This is J-River (version 20), but minus all the Video features and some of the very advanced audio stuff (ASIO Driver I think is missing) and with a timeout - it does autoupdate though... And it costs you Zip, Zilch, Nada:

The Eyewatering Pono Skin (at least I find it not great - to be polite) can be replaced with any downloadable J-River skin, personally I like Fusion X...
Ciao T
At 20 bits, you are on the verge of dynamic range covering fly-farts-at-20-feet to untolerable pain. Really, what more could we need?
Time limited to 1 June 2016. Finds XMOS ASIO driver but so far no output other than Direct Sound. KS missing.
Great recommendation. J. River does more that I can currently see using it for; as you mention, the video. Just audio is what I want it for. If it can be skinned with a J. River interface, or something else interesting, that's the user experience I'd prefer. I'll give it a look.
Thanks!
..and can we mention it is free? :)
"I'm considering is whether I should pay for an annual subscription"
The JRiver fee is not an annual subscription. It is a one off charge and that is all there is to pay for the version downloaded, period.
They do offer new versions annually but whether you want or need to buy them is up to you. Much of the updating is often concerned with the video handling capabilities of the player if this interests you. During the time that the version that you have is supported you will be able to get new builds (updates) free.
You can control JRiver via your phone or tablet by downloading their Gizmo app (free).
Well - Doh! Shoulda read that more carefully. Useful information. That makes is perhaps even more attractive. Not especially pricey.
Thanks.
JRiver can be configured as a DLNA server (Media network)
You can control it from a smart phone using UPnPlay or any other UPnP/DLNA enabled player

Have a look at MusicBee, kind of JRiver lite ,a elegant piece of freeware
The Well Tempered Computer
Thanks, that helps understand what to configure for media network duty. I didn't try this during my trial.
Thanks for the tip on MusicBee. Elegant resonates with me. I've also taken a closer look at Foobar skins. Some of them look like that might bring the user experience I'm looking for to Foobar, too.
Go to your app store and search on JRiver, Gizmo is free, the other remote app there is a fee. It should work with your phone. To be sure find the apps. Gizmo works with my Android tablet.
I only have experience with JRiver and Vinyl Studio, for what they cost you may as well buy JRiver. You can always add another player later.
I've read good things about Roon and HQ Player, but they both cost a lot more than JRiver.
Thanks, Jeff.
