I see that there are some Music Players out there that are relatively cheap that play FLAC files from their own storage systems. I was wonder if anyone knows of a Player that can play FLAC Files from a USB Hard Drive connected to it?
Here is an example of a FLAC Music Player.Cut-Throat

Not the answer to your question, however the Cowon PLENUE D takes up to a 128gb micro sd card. If his computer doesn't support micro SD, you can get a cheap micro SD to USB reader/writer for about $20

I take it from the example in the link that you are talking about personal portable players?
The problem is that a portable player will not provide the power output to support an external 2.5" portable USB HDD which I also assume you are referring to.
So in portable device terms it isn't feasible.
If you mean that you would like to play FLACs directly from a desktop USB HDD or from the USB output of a PC via such a portable player then I am unaware of any device of this kind that can do this as it wouldn't seem to fit with its purpose.
The problem is that a portable player will not provide the power output to support an external 2.5" portable USB HDD which I also assume you are referring to.
That hurdle can be solved via a powered USB hub .
Today, however, 256 GB flash drives can be acquired pretty inexpensively. While not in the terabyte range, my library would fit on one of those.
No, the problem cannot be solved by a powered USB hub. The OP is looking at PORTABLE players. A powered USB hub has to be plugged into a wall socket to power it. Of course if you have a portable wall (with connection to the local utility supplier).....

Actually this is for a friend of mine that wants a player in his Camper. He has had problems with a Laptop and wanted a more stable system. A powered USB hub and the player I linked to may be just what he is looking for.

No, the problem cannot be solved by a powered USB hub. While it appears that only problems exist in your world, the good news for the rest of us is there are solutions. Revisit the link in my post for the hub and you'll find this:
"Dual-Purpose Wall Charger: 5V/2A charger powers the hub for accelerated data transfer, and also charges your phone. "
It's 5V/2A output can charge your phone? Hmmm. Do you think that anyone has ever thought of providing a compatible battery source for tackling that challenge? :)
I purchased a Jockery Giant to power my Logitech Touch Network player. You'll note it also outputs 2A @ 5V and can run the player for many hours.
I return to using a high capacity flash drive. For $50, you can get one that can store ~ fifteen hundred hours of FLAC. You'd think that would suffice for portable use.

In the example link that you gave : "Dual-Purpose Wall Charger: 5V/2A charger powers the hub for accelerated data transfer, and also charges your phone."It is the wall charger that has an output of 5V/2A, not the hub. Also note that the wall charger powers the hub. It does not charge it as the hub has no power storage (battery). It is not portable in the sense of usable in transit (though it is small enough to be carried easily).

"Dual-Purpose Wall Charger: 5V/2A charger powers the hub...That tells us what is required to power the hub.
Also note that the wall charger powers the hub.
That's the whole raison d'etre for the wall wart, n'est-ce pas?
It does not charge it as the hub has no power storage (battery)
Right. The Jockery Battery with it's 5V/2A output can directly power the hub (like it does my Touch player - "Look Ma, no AC!") using a similar USB cable!
Get it now?

" Get it now? ". Yes I do. How about you?I am not talking about external battery power supplies like the Jockery Giant which you have introduced into the thread. I have specifically referred to the powered USB hub that you provided a link to. This cannot be used in transit i.e to power a personal portable music player as per the OP's need. Unless, of course, the OP only wants to use the player at home in a static situation. But this would counter the whole point of owning a portable player so I don't expect that to be his requirement.
Now I will talk about external battery supplies. The Jockery Giant doesn't appear to help. A portable (2.5") USB HDD drive has only one connector. This is used simultaneously to transfer power and data. The Jockery appears only to have power output on its USB outlets, so as to charge external devices. I cannot see anywhere that it can also send data from one device to another. Its manufacturer clearly describes it only as a charger and says nothing about any data connectivity. So it might power up the HDD but there would not be any functionality.
I gather that you are suggesting using both. The Jockery powering the hub. OK, I'll admit that may be feasible but if portable that set up may have to fit in the OP's pocket (where portable muisc cplayers normally reside)which I think is impractical.

" Get it now? ". Yes I do.
Unfortunately, you don't . Sigh.
This cannot be used in transit i.e to power a personal portable music player as per the OP's need.
Not only can it , but I have shown an alternative power supply that can fully replace the normally AC powered wall wart.
A portable (2.5") USB HDD drive has only one connector.
Yes. You connect that to the hub. Which as anyone who has ever used one understands that a USB hub supplies both signal and power.
The Jockery appears only to have power output on its USB outlets, so as to charge external devices.
Or, to power them directly.
I cannot see anywhere that it can also send data from one device to another.
Nor can the wall wart that it replaces. All it does is power the hub.
I gather that you are suggesting using both.
To state the obvious, the answer is yes. You opined that a powered hub could only be driven by wall current. That is most certainly not the case.
OK, you win :-)
It's not a matter of (me) winning. My profession across many decades is based upon problem solving. That's the point of the thread, right? You seem to experience difficulty thinking outside the (your) box.
I presume you are aware that batteries directly supply current to other mobile devices like this:

It seems that my attempt to end the thread lightly and humorously (you did see the smiley?) failed.
Yes I do think that solving the OP's problem is the point. Why do you think that insulting me helps in this?
I was hoping (sooner than later) you'd respond with "Now I get it!"
Alas, I think you still don't understand the notion of powering a USB hub with a battery to support 2.5" hard drives.
Both the Oppo BDP-105D and 103D have three USB "A" ports for connecting USB hard drives and flash drives. They will play FLAC and just about any other digital format including PCM up to 24/192 and DSD.
I own the BDP-105D because I wanted balanced analog outputs. It is the heart of my audio/video entertainment system .
Good luck,
John Elison
