"About the MQA Files:
MQA uses a process called 'music origami' to 'fold' a high-sample-rate signal down to a smaller, lower-data-rate file which can be played back without a decoder. 2L-048 is folded once to 48 kHz 24bit; 2L-120 has no folds; the others are folded three times from 352.8 to 44.1 kHz 24 bit.
An MQA decoder will restore the original recording and 'unfold' it to optimally match its D/A converter. So, for example, on a mobile device, 2L-111 (which is from DXD) can be unwrapped to 44.1, 88.2 or 176.4 kHz whereas a higher-performance DAC can unfold all the way to 352.8 kHz. The ability of one file to be used in several contexts adds considerably to convenience; you don't need to make a down-sample of big download files to play them in your car, 'phone or 'legacy' equipment. If you have an MQA file it can be listened to without any decoder, it's a simple FLAC file."

"If you follow the hi-fi forums, I do because I view it as part of my job, you'll see lots of discussion over MQA (see MQA Continued). You'll also see lots of questions, confusion, skepticism, anger, accusations, death knells, cries of "snake oil" and "hoax", conspiracy theories, misinformation, personal attacks, and prognostications of the end of the good life as we know it. You know, hi-fi forums."

"If anyone tries to tell you that MQA is just another compression technology, like a fancy form of FLAC, don't listen to them because they don't know what they are talking about. If someone tries to tell you how MQA sounds, while never having heard it, don't pay attention."
Follow Ups:
At last punters will now be able to try it by buying the little Meridian Explorer portable DAC/Headphone amp thingy. Or by updating one that they already own.
Maybe thereon we can have some more meaningful disscusssions?
problems
Almost no software is available. Maybe 2L
The little meridian is certainly not nearly as good a dac as my Audio-GD Master 7. It doesn't even have coax outputs

Yes agreed , I think that repertoire going to be a problem long term too (see my earlier postings). I spoke with an executive of one of the majors today and drew a blank on it.As for the Meridan Explorer (and the other hardware that they are enabling), at least it will give the opportunity to compare tracks with and without MQA, irrespective of other considerations if the Explorer or other Meridian DAC is used for both (presumably with cans for the portable). That is of course if non-MQA versions of the software are also made available. It's just that the Explorer is the cheapest route at this point.
As some software will now be available (even if limited in scope) there may now also be the ability to find out how MQA encoded repertoire sounds when not decoded. Many comments here and elsewhere have expressed doubts as total compatability. DRM issues may also be resolved (or not).
At least it is step forward from the speculation that has been the essence of the discussion so far.

Again another stupid discussion of a technology that none of us can hear. In my question who has heard MQA, lots of posts about it, nobody who has heard it. Untihere is no point to these discussions
Alan
It was at RMAF in Denver this last year.
Along with a discussion led by the founder of Meridian, Bob Stuart.
That said, the discussion was so confusing that the demonstration didn't register with me at all because it was unclear to me at the time exactly what I was hearing.
Sounds like an astute reaction to a typical sales demonstration. :-)

Well, I've heard it, and imho, there is still no point to these discussions.
Yep, same here.
CD, SACD, Hi-Rez PCM, DSD.
No damn good, any of 'em...
No matter what's out there, somebody doesn't like it.
