You forgot to add the cost of all the I/O capability that comes standard on all Mac Minis:-Two Thunderbolt 2 ports
-Four USB 3 ports
-HDMI port
-SDXC card slot
-Gigabit Ethernet port
-Wifi 802.11ac latest high speed Wifi
-Audio line-in analog & digital combo port
-Audio line-out analog & digital combo port
-Headphone port
-Bluetooth 4.0
-IR receiver Std
-IR remote included
-Built-in speaker$499 LIST, a bit less if you shop.
And did I mention you get essentially two computers for the price of one since Mac Mini is able to run Mac OS -AND- Windows natively.
Plus it's arguably much prettier in it's 1.4-inch-thin seamless unibody enclosure carved from a single, solid block of aluminum. ;-)

The argument of two computers for the price of one is bogus when one thinks of an apple mini for computer audio (should we remind you that's the ward you're in). How many OS do you need to run your music server/player. 1? 2? 36? I'd argue a good one is all you need. If this is OS X for you, that's cool, others will prefer a flavor of Linux or Windows. How many users really dabble with boot camp on a mac mini anyways?A NUC likely has all the I/O capability you need for computer audio. From the list you have, a NUC misses an SD port (get yourself a card reader if you need this feature ) and thunderbolt (an intel technology that has not taken off so much so that intel removed it from NUCs). Audio lines out of a computer? Seriously? Are you so water deprived in California that the only thing left to drink is cool aid?
As for looks, a NUC is an even better solution for someone who is trying to get rid of clutter. The computer is so small it can be hidden easily. It may not have the fit & finish of an Apple product, but it is far from an eye sore, that's if one can see it of course!

How many users really dabble with boot camp on a mac mini anyways?A few of us right here in this forum. I know of a well known Stereophile reviewer who uses his Mac Mini with Windows 7. Another reviewer here in the Asylum uses his Mac with Mac OS, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 for evaluating audio products.
A NUC likely has all the I/O capability you need for computer audio.
Possibly but your original argument was that a NUC was cheaper than a comparably equipped Mini. What features are we missing? I listed them all. While some features may not be essential for computer "audio" they do come in handy in other areas like operation and backups.
Thunderbolt? Some inmates here in the Asylum use it for attaching their external music library while leaving USB free for the DAC.... or using the extreme speed of Thunderbolt for backups / restore. It is a computer after all and anyone who's done a backup / restore understands the convenience of extreme speed.
Built-in IR Receiver + Remote: Some inmates use it for it's obvious purpose.
Are you so water deprived in California that the only thing left to drink is cool aid?
I'm not in California.
Bottom line: when you add up all the I/O and built-ins you really do get a lot for your money in the Mac Mini. Add up the cost of all those standard features and put them in a NUC (if you can), and you'll be comparably priced if not more.
Oh, and did I mention you get essentially two computers for the price of one in a Mac since it runs Mac OS -AND- Windows natively . ;-)

Artoa - "Are you so water deprived in California that the only thing left to drink is cool aid?"
Abe - "I'm not in California."
lol! I don't know why, but I kinda envisioned you as a cool and hip Californian too! Figured you smoked weed and went to work in your bare feet somewhere in sillycon valley.
I really don't need another computer, but from time to time have toyed with the idea of a small form factor server. (I have i7 and i3 Haswells)
I got my Father to switch to Apple years ago when the negative press was out about vista.
Maybe it's time I gave Apple another shot beyond ipods etc, you might have swayed me.
(Although I never really liked iTunes or Apple's closed policy in regards to apps etc. I switched to using VLC on android and now windows for my portable media players, it's more flexable and easier to use for these tasks. IMO)

Well, how about this. I grew up in Southern California and worked in Silicon Valley in Northern California for many years. I do go to work in my bare feet in my home office but not in California.I'm in Colorado where recreational weed is legal and abundantly available. But I guess I'm just not all that hip. The Federal agency that sponsors my security clearance would take issue if I 'partake' and I'd probably get caught at my next poly or drug test. ;-)
BTW, Mac Mini runs Intel Haswell. VLC runs natively on Mac OS. I've also used Audacity on Mac to rip some vinyl records to AIFF. There's a lot of 'open source' software ported to Mac OS. And if you're a Linux guy, you'll be right at home in front of a Mac terminal window. It's basically UNIX under the hood with many familiar UNIX/Linux utilities and commands.
