I installed Win 10 last week and believe that SQ improved (JRiver MC20 - needed reinstall). My immediate concern is that there seems to be no way to disable automatic loading and installation of Win upgrades. When listening to music I am not watching the screen and will not see any "restarting in 10,9,8" messages and risk the sound being unexpectedly being cut off. Any remedy?

You can normally select how/when updates are installed.
You can be alerted, or do them manually.
Google "How to disable automatic updates service in windows 10"
Cheers,
Presto
Setting the computer up as metered will allow you to select when you update, but it screws up the network connection for remote linking with my iPad. Maybe it won't interfere with your needs.
The metered setting prevents your computer as serving as a source for Microsoft Windows downloads.
I suspect I won't be buying any more computers that come with Windows, nor any more M$ applications. There is simply no need when open source systems work just as well, once you learn to deal with their quirks. Learning the quirks of a new version of Windows seems pointless.
I have a few applications that I use occasionally, e.g. SoundForge and iZotope RX4. Were these available on Linux then Windows would be gone day after tomorrow...

he emphasized privacy as a priority for Microsoft. Nadella seems to have done a complete 180 on that philosophy.

Yes, the rumors (facts?) about Windows 10 put me over the edge. I have a tablet that runs W8.1 and it already does spy things and requires automatic updates to avoid various foolishness, so it didn't take too much more.
Same reason I don't run Apple products or Google products on my computers. No trust.

one should not update without finding out what it is first. For audio, there is just no need.
W7 had usb updates that can kill a PC.
This is supposed to be part of the "Customer Experience Improvement Program." That is the data is to be used to improve how folks use Windows. Of course, one has to wonder exactly how much effort Microsoft is putting into improving Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 at this point and why they would need to gather data about those operating systems now that Windows 10 is out and is very much the future.

Note that Microsoft and other companies sell to the spook markets. One can only imagine all of the aspects of what they might be doing.
I knew at least one spook who worked at Microsoft. I enjoyed tweaking him by asking him technical questions that he would not be permitted to answer because of his security clearance. (It was even more fun doing this with known NSA people, but I only got to do that a few times.)

read about Gordon Welchman who started the whole thing?
I have a copy of Gordon Welchman's book, "The Hut Six Story". As I recall, this book was banned in the U.K. at one time. I am familiar with the detailed workings of the Enigma machine and the methods of its cryptanalysis. I've also enciphered a few letters on a actual Enigma machine which is now on exhibit at the Computer History Museum in Silicon Valley.

So have I, but this one belonged to GCHQ, it was at a science fair. Impressive, if they had another rotor it would never have been cracked.

As I recall, this book was banned in the U.K. at one time
According to Wiki (linked), the book was banned neither in the USA nor the UK though Welchman did fall foul of his adopted government:
"In 1982 his book The Hut Six Story was published, initially by McGraw-Hill in the USA and by Allen Lane in Britain. The National Security Agency disapproved. The book was not banned but Welchman lost his security clearance (and therefore his consultancy with MITRE) and was forbidden to discuss with the media either the book or his wartime work."
That was what I was originally told, perhaps at a time when the book's publication was being held up in the U.K. Of course, this made me get my copy ASAP. Perhaps I am confusing this book with another book that was unsuccessfully banned, "Spycather" by Peter Wright. The same friend put me on to both books.
By the way, I would not trust Wikipedia as a reliable source for any issues of recent history or politics, because it can be heavily edited on controversial subjects.

I've not read The Hut Six Story but presume it's a better read than Wright's Spycatcher , which was dire. I see that the former is still in print (link). OTOH, had the government of the day not tried to ban it, Spycatcher would have been consigned to the obscurity it now deservedly enjoys even more quickly than it was.I would not trust Wikipedia as a reliable source for any issues of recent history or politics, because it can be heavily edited on controversial subjects.
Me neither. I am, as it goes, only too aware of the William Connelly affair and of his contribution to the myth of the "concensus" on "climate change" and much else besides.

I'm sure there are big bucks in contracts like that. I wonder though, how do they get past Russian, Chinese and other foreign, nationally funded inspectors? I can think of at least a dozen other countries who would have intelligence agencies I would treat with respect.

or even visit it, I suspect Google sees you.
Apple makes money selling equipment and software to folks like YOU.
Google sells folks like YOU to those who make just about everything.
Microsoft tries to do both and does neither very well.
Thanks. I tried setting my wifi as metered in Win 10 and initial indications are that this dodge works. I need to do more in depth testing but at least it doesn't seem to affect the network connection to my Android tablet on which I run JRiver Gizmo. Bad luck with your iPad.
just use gpedit to restore options to previous OSs - notify updates and install options in Pro version and have control. I certainly don't want updates of Samoa time zone and Lithuanian currency etc installed by default
Why Microsoft should go to such lengths in making changes like these is puzzling. perhaps they haven't rid themselves of the Start Button no use brigade.
I have also installed the Classic Interface.
It might work for me now. I tried it early in the initial release. Since all the updates, the wi-fi has been working better. But I do use Fidelizer Pro, so that seems to help.
If you try Fidelizer Pro 6.9 (Extremist), it prevents Windows updates. I uninstall it when I want to update once a week.
