...about 5 years ago at a friend's house, we compared his new $16,000 Spectral CD player with the same music on his computer music server on his Wilson Sophia, VTL amp, CJ preamp system.
The computer won.
Follow Ups:
... What was used as the DAC on the PC system? The guts of the Spectral or something else?
Cheers.

...he bought a new PC for music with an solid state hard drive so it has no moving parts.
I suspect he put his music on in it with FLAC or iTunes.
He controlled it with his laptop.
What Sox is asking is, did they both use the same Dac?
For example did he stream the music from the PC through the CDP and use its Dac or did the computer use a different Dac?

...not through the Spectral so the computer must have had its own DAC.
...Have a DAC of some descript.
However I have my music library on hard disc and stream it wirelessly to 5 systems throughout the house.
The systems receiving the signal all have a DAC, either in a digital player or the receiver or a stand alone DAC.
I don't actually listen to music from the soundcard on my PC.

Usually not something worth spending time with.
.
OK, not likely.
I hope.
Spectral CD player=Paint Peeler. I don't care if it is $160,000.
...actually the Spectral sounded very good and the differences were subtle but in favor of the computer - more inner detail and dynamics.
