Thought for a moment you were suggesting chucking the whole SONOS system. ;-)
Yeah, an extended 802.11n wifi network at 5CHz is likely more robust that the SONOS bridge anyway, now that SONOS supports it (but not at 5GHz?). Do the older SONOS components have a 5 GHz radio in them?
Would that I had the foresight to have the placed wired for ethernet when we remodeled a few years ago. :-)
Clearly that's the problem at the AirPort Express is NOT on the same network as the rest of the system as far as SONOS is concerned.
What is odd is that it IS on the same system as far a AirPlay is concerned.
Not having much luck re-setting the AirPort Express to Default Factory Settings using the AirPort utility as I see no box to click for that and who remembers what it was set to originally.
That said, it is obvious from the link you provided that I need to set the AirPort Express up to 'extend a wireless network' which I think I can do and can test for.
Thanks.

Just a dumb thing, but did you check the network settings on the AirPort Express, AirPlay and the Sonos?
Our internal network assigns IP in the 10.10.1.100-200 range. By design, the wireless router gets it's IP from the primary router, but assigns wireless devices in the 10.10.2.0-255 range. Those networks will not see each because I don't want a wireless device to be able to access computers on the wired network.
BTW: We found the while 5Ghz is supposed to be faster, it just doesn't go very far. We can't get a signal on the other side of the house reliably, but 2.5Ghz works fine and with 5 bars.
I wouldn't discount it being a Apple thing either. I've had problems on and off with connecting a Mac to a Windows share, it won't see it or it sees and then forgets after copying a few files. Did it ever work or is this a new configuration?

My easy chair in the living room is a scant 10-15 feet from the Time Capsule/wifi router and the MacBook Air prefers 5 GHz for some reason.
And yet on the deck upstairs off the listening room (in the hammock, as old guys do) regular 2.5 Ghz works better on my iPhone.
SONOS works fine hooked up via ethernet cable to the Time Capsule/wifi router. It doesn't seem to think it's on the same network when attached via ethernet to the AirPort Express even though that AirPort Express allows my NA-7004 to stream via Air Play from the same network the SONOS is on.
BUT...
I managed to change the wifi password on the Time Capsule/router so I'm ready for ANYTHING!
Right...
There's a tiny button on the AE, - to reset back to factory.
Factory default reset
Disconnect the base station from its power source.
Press and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip, then plug the base station back in while continuing to hold the button for approximately 5 seconds until you see the three status lights glow.
Release the button.
As far as the base station goes, - in most versions of Airport Utility, - (as I remember), there is a button that you'll need to select that says "extend this wireless network." (Doubt that that is your issue, - but I would check it nonetheless).
Good Luck.
"Asylums with doors open wide,
Where people had paid to see inside,
For entertainment they watch his body twist
Behind his eyes he says, 'I still exist.'"
Just didn't see it on the Airport Utility.
Will give that a go on the morrow. Off to see Yuja Wang at Davies!
Thanks for the help.
