He also said " And, I originally planned on using the 1TB hard drive in the laptop, backing up to an external 2TB drive. He said all files[music] should be kept on an external hard drive, and that I should get a 250GB solid state hard drive for the laptop, just for the operating system and players. "
Kal this is aimed generally not directly in response to your point, I just needed to get it in chronological order in the thread.
I am myself similarly just about to plump for a 2TB laptop solely for music streaming/ripping/playing/storage plus external HDD(s) copy or copies of music files. Why not? I can't see why a PC's storage may be inferior to an external drive so long as security copies are made. But am I wrong?
Follow Ups:
Having the main storage external means (1) it can be placed remotely where it's noise is irrelevant, (2) it is more easily expanded and/or replaced.
I have only 240gb storage on my Baetis server, just enough to boot it and run programs. All music files are on my NAS 2 rooms away.
That's a very helpful couple of points. I will revise my plans.
