I believe in making things as simple as possible. We're actually on the same page here, I think. I HATE complexity.
But I hardly do things for casual listening anymore. It's more like I do things so OTHER people can do casual listening. The guys in my audio club are completely on top of the latest digital audio tech. I don't even own an iPod. Go figure.
However, I'm VERY interested in what other people have to say about digital audio playback tech. I don't mean to sound dismissive, because I certainly don't feel that way.

Yes, we are. I too abhor the complexity involved in "computer audio.
The future truly lies, IMO, in reducing the, at this point, ridiculous complexity of it all.
Basically, all of the mobile, multimedia devices people use now are small computers -- tablets, smart phones, etc. -- and they're used for audio playback, among other things. Are those multi-function devices more acceptable to you because they're small and integrated, or do you think there's more room for simplification?I mean, do you prefer devices that do strictly audio playback, or would you accept other functions besides? I'm just curious.

I have zero interest in multifunction devices.
I am testing out an Auralic Aries which is a single purpose device with a goal of being simpler and better sounding than its regular computer counterparts.
That's interesting to know. Thanks.

To each their own. I may change my mind at some point but right now I have zero interest in a single box device. While some manufacturers make such boxes "future-proof", all too often that's no guarantee of future obsolescence. Particularly as fast as the technology associated with digital playback evolves.
It seems like connecting an external hard drive, or thumb drive would turn the Aries into one heck of a pocket server.
Please let us know how it turns out.

Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
My plan for using the Auralic Aries and Lampizator Levei 4 DAC:Aries is connected to DAC with BOTH USB and COAX digital cables.
For PCM files up to 24/192 (99.9%) I will use the COAX .
For DSD and DXD type files I will use USB.
Since changing from PCM to DSD requires flick a switch on the back of the Lampizator DAC, I will then also flick the switch that changes the input from COAX to USB.I agree that USB as digital audio output/input remains a work in progress and am glad I have the option to stream though the COAX.
The Auralic Aries addresses a lot of the USB shortcomings - but not all. Today I also will take delivery of an item called the Uptone Audio Regen that "conditions" the digital signal at the USB input of the DAC (it's mostly about reducing noise and impedance matching). For now I'm using the Aries with a 4TB hard drive plugged directly into it. It contains over 40,000 songs/files and 3,000+ albums. Over half of these are high resolution.
The Aries can also be used to do wireless streaming off the network and internet. At some point I'll probably set up network attached storage and stream my music off of the network instead of the USB drive.

Had an Aries for 5 months. Used it for streaming Tidal over WIFI. Had constant problems with it. Finally returned it because even the Aries tech could not get it to work. Even bought a super hitech router but constant dropouts. Got a MacBook Pro and everything works perfectly. I even stream Clssicsonlinehdll which streams up to 24/192. No problems. By the way I have a Regen and it really improves the sound of USB

Sounds like a plan. That's a lot of music, and a nice DAC. Consider yourself lucky that you don't also have to set the PCM sample rate every time you play a different one.Are you concerned that the USB hard drive delivers enough information fast enough?
