I do wonder if a better way will leave all of what we have today behind. Surely it will but in our lifetime?
I hear there's a game changer out there called Pono but the buzz seems to have died down in recent months.
As an aside, the first Apple iPod was released in 2001. The latest 6th gen iPod Touch was quietly released just last week July 2015. Still around after 14 years. For those who miss the 120GB & 160GB hard disk based Classic, there's a 128GB iPod Touch 6th gen.

At US$400 the player is too expensive to be taken seriously by the price conscious average consumer, and, paradoxically, too inexpensive to be taken seriously by the equally price conscious average audiophile. How many 24 bit/192kHz songs can you fit into 64 gigs anyhow?

...JA in Stereophile, the Pono is the state-of-the-art in a portable digital music player.
Ayre designed the D/A converter.
I'm sure Pono is state of the art (sort of) but I think the question is whether it is appealing enough to consumers or audiophiles to actually keep it afloat. But we've beaten that debate to death a couple months ago. ;-)
