As a guy of 70, why not let them enjoy what they enjoy?
At the end of the day, I still prefer vinyl. Can't imagine anyone coming in here and trying to convince me otherwise.
Ripping CD's to a hard drive makes no sense at all to me, especially when used CDs can be had almost free. And you can read the insert while listening.

I agree with this 100%.
However, I'm assuming you are not a guy in his 70s, so, with all respect, I have to disagree when you say: "Ripping CD's to a hard drive makes no sense at all to me, especially when used CDs can be had almost free."
You might be surprised at how liberating it can be to move away from optical media and to digital media, be it rust or sand.
I will not deny that choosing a media player and a storage format are not daunting decisions, and that ripping is not a long, laborious process; but I will say that once you've gotten a digital library you won't look back.
No more searching for a misplaced disc. No more trotting back and forth to the optical drive if you're not in the mood to hear entire discs at once. No more standing around while you wait for the optical drive to open, pull out your old disc, insert the new one and then waiting for it to close while you put away the just used disc. Indeed, you will find it liberating at how quickly and effortlessly you can access and enjoy your music. It is as if you have your own digital quality radio station, allowing you to mix and match whatever discs and tunes that you want.
Nearly free CDs simply allow you to enlarge your digital library. Once you get started, the thing will snowball surprisingly quickly. Then your biggest issue will be to make sure you have a digital back up (easy and cheap to do these days) so you don't lose all your work.
Come on in! The water is fine!

I am 73 years young
I listen to vinyl on my new turntable
I listen to CD's on my audionote transport and Metrum Hex Dac. I have 5000 cds
I stream Tidal and Classicsonline from a MacBook pro to the Metrum Hex
I play ripped cds from a USB drive using Jriver or VLC
I love them all and have never had a technical challenge I couldn't handle
Don't under estimate the capabilities of your parents. There smarter than you think

Sad to say, I am. :-(
The worst thing about my age is that if someone runs over me on a bike ride the newspaper will report: "ELDERLY MAN ON BICYCLE HIT BY SUV".
I'm an old guy with somewhere near 4000 classical LPs and more than a few CDs(thousands?). I have no interest in loading all that onto a computer.
That said, I do stream music from QOBUZ, DEEZER Elite, Spotify and TIDAL and do use a computer for that purpose. It's well over 50% of my listening these days so that explains why I'm here.
Searching music on QOBUZ is a dream, DEEZER and TIDAL, not so much. But then someone else had to do the work of organizing the database.
NOT ME! Might be dropping TIDAL this month, keeping QOBUZ and DEEZER Elite for now. Spotify only for the small SONOS speaker in the kitchen as it doesn't mind MP3. Even with all four streaming services, I pay less per month than many folks who have cable.
Old people get their movies free from the library.
On DVD.
With cover art to look at! :-)
We also like cat .gif's.
... in much better shape, mentally, than you are?
Of course it didn't, how silly of me to ask.
But as long as you continue to post here and we're grading on the curve, I'll be fine.
And you can read the insert while listening.
But why in the world would you want to do that instead of reading Audio Asylum!
This place is a laugh a minute!
