vary enormously from site to site. Hong Kong seems much cheaper than UK.
However, the labels for the same card are different and some of the HK sellers have very low sales records on eBay (tens, which makes me suspicious).
UK prices for the same card can vary by 50% as well.

I believe there are allot of fakes out there. I try sticking with reputable dealers, Amazon etc. Even some 3rd party sellers on Amazon are probably selling fakes if they are too cheap. IMO I would not worry as much about speed as getting a reliable card.
Ya gotta make sure the card is shipped and sold through either Amazon itself or a reputable retailer like B&H Photo, etc.
Most camera folks claim fake cards are slow but WHAT IF THE FAKE CARDS ARE ALSO NOISY?????
What would 'fmak' do then?
in the markets for SD, Micro cards and usb fobs.
I get loads of propositions for cheap usb devices and have had to clean out allowable mail shots.
The profit margins must be huge?
I am not sure if profits are that large, or just people are fighting for every penny.
In China you can see stories of people making Buns out of old cardboard boxes, there is fake medications. There is crazy stuff going on... Bootleg memory cards are nothing.
tens of million pounds worth of fake drugs in UK recently.
... Chasing the best price is not always the best policy.
For peace of mind and convenience why not just buy a name brand from a local retailer? Who cares what price Harry Who sells something "similar" for in Honkers?
I'm not sure what capacity you are after but they are not expensive.
How much is no fuss and peace of mind worth to you?

for 64G UHS 1 90 Mb/s price varies depends on source from £30 to £60!
not insignificant
.... If it were me, which yes, I know I am not you, but nonetheless I'd buy a name brand from a name local B&M retailer.
Frigging around is simply not worth it to me.
Good luck.

at £60, I can buy a decent ssd! At £30 or thereabouts, I can buy an entry ssd.
It is not a question of dithering or messing, but a questions of not buying things that may not be gen or work. This is particularly true when it comes to computer hardware (or software).
Waste not want not.
... I thought you were wanting to build some type of miniature/minimalist music server.
I know they are more money but a good SSD will have faster read & write speeds and I believe are a better application for music.
If you have the slightest worry about an SSD or card being a fake then purchase a name brand from a local B&M retailer. Tying to save a few pennies and stressing over if something is fake or not is just silly.
If you are hooked on wanting to try something fast, buy a Samsung SSD 850 PRO. Provided the rest of your PC is up to it.
I'm sure a decisive move is just around the corner ....
Good luck!

I don't understand the fad for Samsung Pros. The casings ate tinny, in use they are no faster than equivalent Sandisks and others, the Magician software doesn't work fully, they use tlcs, but many seem to have been persuaded to buy and recommend them.
I am very experienced by way of SSDs but so far have avoided too much use of SD cards due to sluggish performance and fake ware. I am not even sure that named sellers actually all have the gen stuff.
....Which I happen to like. Certainly 'faster' than the dinky little cards you are talking about.
Maybe I should have also added Sandisk, Corsair, Kingston, Crucial, Mushkin etc etc.
However I don't think it will matter what I say. There is a giant world conspiracy and everybody sells fake everything. Gosh, the end is near.
I forgot you are very experienced with products you have avoided too much use of. I'm positive you are not dithering and are the epitome of decisiveness.
Make sure you regale the board with your findings about how a faster hard drive affects your audio set-up.
I can hardly wait.
Cheers.

Some folks don't seem to understand that speed alone is not the only criteria for judging the quality of SSDs, and I wouldn't trust the judgement of a person who defragments his.
Samsung 840 and 850 Pro series have universally received rave reviews by websites run by people who specialize in storage devices. However, there was an issue with a 850 Pro firmware update. The bottom line is this. If you don't need the update don't install it. These updates are often to improve performance in very specific cases and if you don't fit that case there is no need to update the firmware. The latest shipments of the 850 Pro series have the latest update.
SSDs are all commodity products but Samsung is clearly the technology and market leader in the field of flash memory and SSDs. My two choices for SSDs would include Samsung and Intel.
