All,

Hey my neighbor is looking for a WIFI Airplay receiver with a volume (remote not required) control and XLR outputs to feed to his powered Yamaha NS8 speakers.

Any ideas? most that I could find required Ethernet connection. He wants to use this outside and or a place were Ethernet can't be pulled.

Firstly I am assuming you meant HS8s as I can't find anything called NS8.

Secondly unless he has a problem with picking up noise there is nothing wrong with using unbalanced connections.

With those two assumptions (HS8, no noise problem) he would need a cables with RCA on one side and 1/4 inch TS plug on the speaker end.
According to the manual HS8 do not accept unbalanced on the XLR input but the 1/4 jack input accepts TRS (balanced) or TS (single ended).

If either of these assumptions are wrong forget I posted this. ;-)

How about a 2-Box solution?

Box 1) DAC with Volume Control and XLR Out (could be one of yours)
Box 2) One of the many available Airplay (Using Sharepoint - Airplay with Apple tax) to USB DAC Bridges (all based on Linux and other open source software and available in both fancy cases for a lot of cash or very cheap as firmware modded routers)

With this he may even graduate to DLNA, MPD and be able to stream HiRez, Tidal etc...

At 20 bits, you are on the verge of dynamic range covering fly-farts-at-20-feet to untolerable pain. Really, what more could we need?

  A DAC like the Essence HDACC has XLR out.
  It also has HDMI in.
  Combine this with a Airplay HDMI stick e.g. Rencast

The least expensive one box solution I can think of is the Pioneer N-70. But it's hard to find and requires the optional Pioneer AS-WL300 wifi module. Seems overkill for his speakers. If he only cares about AirPlay, how about an Apple TV feeding a DAC with HDMI inputs and XLR outputs such as the Essence HDACC? A cheaper option with more choices would be a wireless Airplay compatible device with RCA outputs and RCA-XLR adapters.

Costs almost as much as your best stuff, so perhaps a bit overkill for the outdoor patio. ;-)

    They were showing it at RMAF (Rocky Mountain Audio Fest) streaming QOBUZ over the internet, which is exactly what I would use it for if I could afford one.
