Hello. Here is the story from a newbie.
A friend loaned me a zip drive with a bunch of songs on it. I transferred the songs to iTunes. All or these songs were compressed at 128 bits. Did change all those songs to Lossless via ITunes and the sound is atrocious, compared to my own cd`s that I burned on my MacBook.
Here are the questions:
were the cd that were used on the zip drive bad quality?
was the equipment used to burn the cd of bad quality?
can I save /remedy the issue, or do I need to delete all the songs ?
if I delete and start again, what is a good source of high quality cd? as well as high quality downloaded songs? Thoughts?
I heard that Apple is going to launch HD tracks , for more money of course, this summer?
Hope all this make sense.
I appreciate any info and the time you spend typing an answer.
Regards.

Once you've lost musical information, by downgrading from CD quality to lossy, you cannot get it back by expanding. Re-rip into losseless next time.
Seeking out high quality compact discs is an art form. Hint - don't be fooled into thinking remasters are necessarily better. Good luck.
I have a cousin who did the same thing and put a bunch of 128K files on a thumb drive and could play them back in his car and laptop on the road. I gave him a 2496 DVD of some wav files and he asked why HIS files sounded so awful, including all his ITunes media.
Sometimes what you don't know can hurt you. What is gone is gone forever. He is now not going below redbook quality as he as seen (heard) the light. Most who love music and just spend a little time comparing will not stay in mp3 land long.

The original cd's were probably fine. The ripping settings chosen (128 bits) are awful.

No

There is no save. Delete and start over.

Most newer disks as well as many that have been remastered will be perfectly fine. The loudness and compression wars are your biggest enemy.

Interesting. Rumors. If Apple does this then there will be DRM in their files because Apple. HDTracks is a good source. No DRM and you have multiple formats available. I usually get FLAC. Apple Lossless is also offered as well as WAV.
That is all.......................
delete the tracks, they are 128, if you expand them to lossless they will still be 128 just bigger.
as for tracks, I would just buy the cds at the moment and rip them originally to lossless yourself.
I'm sure others can chime in where to buy lossless files. I subscribe to lossless music streaming services, I haven't bought a CD in a long time (over a year) because of that.
