I have been using a MacBook Pro as my primary computer-based system with a Bel Canto 2.5 DAC in a 2 channel only system. I use Pure Music as my player, and just upgraded to version 2.0 finally. Once I got up to speed on PM, I've never had any real issues with it in that system, and version 2.0 has been fine too.
This past weekend I decided to experiment with moving the Mac into my HT/MCH/2CH combo system. I need to update my system profile, but the most relevant equipment for purposes of my post is an Oppo 105 and Krell Foundation pre-pro. (Love both pieces for movies, MCH music and stereo.)
I love the sound I am getting, but am experiencing some bugginess with the Mac hooked into the Oppo's USB DAC input in the back. First, I couldn't get the Oppo to recognize a signal at all even though all the settings looked right. Then suddenly I could and had a great listening session. But later when I switched out to watch TV and then later back to the Mac, I was once again unable to get a signal. But all day today it's been playing fine. However, I keep getting a blue screen intermittently, especially when I first turn the Mac on.
One fact that *might* be relevant is that I have also hooked the Mac up to an HDMI input in the Krell (with a mini-display adapter) so that my wife and I can also use it to watch Region 3 DVDs. We'd been using a "hacked" NAD DVD player for her Korean DVDs but would like to reduce clutter. I don't think that the dual hook-up is causing the problem though, as I believe the issues were also occurring with the mini-display adapter unplugged.
I am wondering if anyone else has experienced any of these issues and/or found work-arounds. The Mac is an early 2011 MB Pro if that's of any relevance.
I am also wondering if I should relieve the MacBook of this duty and get a dedicated Mac Mini, but then I wouldn't have an optical drive so I'd still have to burn discs on the MacBook and would be stuck with the NAD for the Korean DVDs.
I am beset by First World Problems! Oh, poor me. ;-)

Follow Ups:
Have been using a HP W7 desktop with the 105 for the last year and a half. It works perfectly using the JRiver player. Like others here, I tend to just plug a hard drive directly into the Oppo. Use a 1tb Toshiba usb powered hard drive with no problems. Also use a 1tb, full size WD hard drive with a wall wart power supply. All work fine. Love the 105.
Thanks
Mine works very nicely - I have a MacMini connected to its USB input.
It toggles back and forth between CD play and USB with no issues.
I haven't used a flash stick yet.
I have been using my Oppo 105 as DAC for a number of sources. I have used USB memory sticks, I have used Western Digital USB3 laptop drives (2 Terabytes each) and now I use a Synology NAS with 30TB via ethernet. All of them worked equally well and all of them can be browsed and controlled via the OPPO Media Control App on your Iphone or Ipad. File types (for Audio) include Flac (16/44 up to 24/192) and DSD.
The Synology has its own set of apps available as well. It is hard to beat the Oppo for versatility.
My only request to Oppo would be to include a connector for Tidal or Qobuz. I hear Tidal is coming...
Have you tried putting your music files onto USB flash drives or even USB hard drives and plugging them directly into the Oppo BDP-105? That's what I do and the Oppo plays all my digital formats up through DSD(64). I didn't particularly like using a computer music server and my Oppo BDP-105 enabled me to eliminate the computer entirely.

But I have a fairly large library so even with two high capacity USB sticks I wouldn't be able to fit everything, though I suppose I could make more and then swap them out easily enough.
Is there a USB hard drive that you recommend with high capacity? My understanding is that not all will work on the Oppo because it doesn't output enough power through the USB to run a standard computer hard disc drive.

All my Toshiba USB hard drives work just fine. I have a number of Toshiba USB-powered hard drives up to 2-TB each that all work fine. I have a Samsung 4-TB USB hard drive that uses an external power supply that works just fine, too. The only problem with USB hard drives is that they remain running whenever the Oppo is being used for other things like playing DVDs and streaming music and movies from the internet; therefore, I bought some 256-GB USB flash drives and loaded my favorite music onto them. However, my Oppo works just fine with every USB hard drive I've ever connected to it.

Is there an app to display what the Oppo is playing from a flash drive/HHD?
I might get one for just playing music, but I do not wish to mount a monitor in the listening room.
Yes! There are apps.
I guess I should get cracking with some 256 GB flash drives, leave the Mac in the other system, and just leave the NAD in its slot for Region 3 sourced DVDs.

These are the ones I use.
