I can understand from your posting that you have not had a problem ripping or playing using the software that your prefer. But the OP's question concerns the restoration of music files from a backup copy. Or that the origiinal files have been altered after making the backup (it's a bit ambiguous). Have you had any positive or negative experiences doing this?

I guess I misinterpreted the problem. I don't do "backups" per se. I have multiple hard drives loaded with duplicates of all my digital files, but they were not obtained from a "backup" program. I just store my music on different hard drives in case one goes bad.
Sorry!

Thanks.
I think that you have a sensible policy and it's one I will emulate.
Although not necessarily related to the OP's problem I have had recent diffculties with restoring general files from a backup made with the Windows backup program. I got most of my text files back but no way could I or an expert computer support technician retrieve my photos. Fortunately I also had them stored elsewhere.
There does seems to be a problem in using backup programs if the restore is made from a different one even from the same "family", in my case from Vista to 8.1.
Still I guess that doesn't help the OP.
I second John's method. I don't use a backup program for my music files. I currently have close to 15K+ tracks on a 3TB drive (I plan on getting a 6TB replacement drive for my originals) and I keep copies on 2X4TB drives (one of the 4TB's is a NAS which I keep on another network in my house on a different floor). Periodically, I make full copies to the different drives to make sure I have copies of any updates to my originals.
All my files are either 192K/24bit Wav or Flac.
I've never had any problems and I periodically play selections from all drives to make sure there are no problems on any of the drives.
