The new machine in question is going to eventually replace the MacBook Air, not the MacBook Pro.
The single port is stupid and deserves to be lampooned. But this machine has zero relevance to computer audio.
This is Apple's answer to the Surface Pro.

and then without an optical drive.
And, and, and.
OK, it's not for me, but for some who travel a lot and do everything in the cloud, it will likely be a great machine.
What use do most people have for an optical drive these days? If I use one twice a year that's a lot, and it's because I bought a software package on a special deal, otherwise I would have gotten the downloadable version.
Of course there are some people who still have a reason to need an optical drive, such as ripping CD's, but it doesn't make sense to add weight and expense to a general purpose laptop for something that only a few customers need. There are other machines or external drives that will do the trick.
You will notice I never lamented the loss of onboard optical drives on Apple computers. They sucked, and were not reliable for ripping CDs or DVDs anyway. But Apple did not remove them because they decided nobody "needs" them, they did so to increase profit margin.
I don't think it's that nobody needs them -- some people do -- but rather that most people no longer need them. And not only would that increase their profit margin (or allow them to cut prices -- in an alternative universe), it would allow them to save weight and reduce size. I know that if I were buying a laptop I'd choose the one without an optical drive even if Apple's didn't have a reputation for dying.
It seems to me that Apple is rudderless here.
WHY introduce a "Mac Book" when it was deleted from the line up 2 years ago?
Why bring it back? Apple clearly wanted to have the Pro only to simply the line.
The Air is a completely different machine and product..so I think your guess is far off the mark.
Everyone knew in advance Apple was going to announce the new Air at this keynote. People have been asking for an Air with Retina display for a couple years and this is it. The only minor surprise is the name. The "MacBook" name was previously used for the bottom of the laptop lineup. In recent years the 11.6" Air was the bottom of the lineup, and this is its replacement. So calling it the MacBook (sans Air) is consistent with prior use of the name.
The fact that Apple released a new ultrabook with a single port really means nothing at all wrt the future of using computers are transports.
