Hi !
i would love to hear "stories", successful or not, from people who have migrated from Windows 7 to 8.1 in order to understand if 8.1 is really a better option for audio purposes.
Also some kind suggestions about SW players would be very welcome and appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
Kind regards,

Have you moved to 8.1 or are you just thinking about it? If you are still on 7, I would say stay there for another few months. Microsoft is about to bring out Windows 10 and have announced that it will be a free upgrade (for the first year after release) to users of Windows 7 and 8.
The user paradigm shifts dramatically between 7 and 8.1. The user paradigm shifts again when moving from 8.1 to 10. No sense in having to learn three different versions of Windows in one year!

Hi i am still on 7 64 bit with my "best" pc
But i am playing win the mini pc Pipo X7 that comes with 8.1 Bing 32 bit (!) preinstalled and i am surprised by its sound.
It is a little tricky to set up rightly bios wise and tends to overheat just a little when the HW is set to the max.
But the sound is amazing even from its front headphone out.
As the HW in the main pc is much more powerful i guess that 8.1 has a very nice touch with sound.
However i am still in the learning phase. It will take me a while before understanding something of its bios. Many many setting options.
Then i will take this mini pc to the house of an "analog only" friend of mine with a quite good system.
Kind regards,

I agree, I get great sound out of my Windows 8.1 PC!

Hi and thanks a lot again.
So it's time to migrate. However i hope i could stick with 8.1 for quite some time.
Acceptable solution for me would be to get a decent usb to spdif converter compatible with 8.1, and wait to find some great dac bargain.
This is my idea after all.
Thanks again.

(and I'm not going to try as I've heard very few computer-side differences in my system)
But I just installed 8.1 on a new home PC. I wish I would have gotten 7. 8.1 is too different for me. It's easy to get it to boot to a normalish desktop but the "Apps" looks is always looming. It's been frustrating to figure out how to launch programs. I've had to pin them ALL to the desktop of taskbar to save time and aggravation.
i am very well willing to study a little more the user interface
I am using the pc mostly for streaming of audio files from a Nas.
It is just a matter to install and lunch a SW audio player and then the interface is that of the audio player and not that of 8.1.
However to get good sound from a pc is challenging.

Hi and yes i am mostly interested in audio quality.
I would like to get a nice sound from my pc.
I would say 8.1 could be better than 7 for sound.
But i would love to have some valuable confirmations/advice.
Thanks.

The Start screen can be useful if you take a few minutes to pin your desired apps to it and then arrange them into groupings and an order that makes sense to you.
When you open the Start screen, there is a small "down" arrow in the bottom left corner. Click on that to get a listing of all the apps on your machine. That listing will first display all the "modern" apps and then all the "classic" apps. Right click on any of them and choose to pin them to the taskbar or to Start. I'd pin your favorites apps to the taskbar and ones you don't use too often but still want quick access to to Start.
Once you have some tiles for your apps on the Start screen you can drag them into groups. By right clicking a blank area on the Start screen you can choose to name your groups. By clicking on the tiny "-" symbol in the bottom right corner of the Start screen you can drag the groups and order them how you wish. Once your groups are in order click on the Start screen again to see your newly organized Start screen!
I hope this helps!
