Pretty inexpensive 75 ohm cable was all that was required and proper connectors. It worked and sounded OK, but I put aside that project. It was just a 25 foot run of cable though that I tried, so I don't know about longer runs.

Thanks! I've used a long Toslink cable in the past and found the sound to be ok, but certainly not great. I cheap CD player with coax output to the same DAC sounded obviously better than iMac through the long Toslink, but that may have been a question of iMac vs. CD player or coax vs. Toslink, since I didn't try a shorter Toslink.
The 'proper' connectors were a problem though:
I found screw on BNCs which were easy to apply and then I got a BNC to RCA adapter and that seemed to work very well.
