It of course depends on the inputs of your DAC
iMac > toslink > DAC http://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/HW/Connect/SPDIF_connect.htm
iMax > USB extender cable > DAC

Thanks!
I've tried a very long (> 10m) Toslink in the past, but I wasn't convinced of the sound quality. Are there better Toslink cables now?
These USB extenders seem worth investigating.
Not unlike your description, my iMac is also located in a corner of the same room as the main audio system.
I use a long-length Toslink cable out of the iMac mini-Toslink output, routed to the Toslink input of a Monarchy Audio DIP (digital interface processor) located in the audio system across the room, with a short-length digital coaxial cable routed from the DIP to the DAC within that system.
Use of the Monarchy Audio DIP greatly improves the performance level of the the otherwise unimpressive sounding Toslink interface method.
iMac -> Toslink -> DIP -> DAC
For video use only, I use a long-length HDMI cable routed from the iMac to a television screen in the main audio system, with Bluetooth Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Wireless Mouse functioning as remote control.
Thanks! That Monarchy DIP looks worth investigating, especially if it would allow for a long cable.
Even with an optimum-length and very high-performance Silflex Glass digital optical cable, the Monarchy DIP provides substantial sonic betterment vs. Toslink cables plugged directly into an SP/DIF input DAC, IME.
I use a Lifatec Silflex Glass Optisilk mini-Toslink to Toslink for the iMac computer digital optical output plugged into a Monarchy Audio DIP. It's highly respected and affordable Toslink cable talked about in computer audio forums.
Even an inexpensive, relatively high-performance Monoprice Premium Toslink can perform quite well when used with a Monarchy DIP for a long-length run Toslink application.
