I have tried several different DSD rates and get a choppy playback. I asked at the Jriver forum and it was suggested it could be a lack of cpu power. I checked usage during playback and it was around 27%. Computer is a windows 8.1 laptop running a A4 processor, 8 gig ram, USB hard drive music storage, and Wyred4 Sound DSD SE DAC. I also tried standard 16/44 recordings upsampled to DSD with the same results. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Yes. There was not enough processor power in the laptop I was using to upsample to DSD. I switched to another laptop and still had a bit of drop out so I did the latency test and it recommended I turn off wifi and adjust the minimum CPU throttling to 100%. It works perfectly now and it is well worth the effort IMO.

Check the Dac Prefs and J River Prefs for a setting you might have missed.
Try Increasing buffer size.
Processor Speed may not be fast enough for on -the -fly , check Requirements.
Is it only Up-Converting PCM to DSD that is choppy, or do DSD Files do it too?
Both upsampling and DSD material do the same thing. I suspect it is a CPU issue because the usage goes up dramatically when going to 2XDSD from DSD.
I just got jriver 20 for Mac, and it doesn't yet have 2X DSD going.
The Up-Converting PCM to standard DSD is good, tho.
One of the folks a Mytek recommend it on Sound Quality, even over Audirvana.
He also said he thought 2X DSD, didn't just sound better, it Felt Better!
Anyway, I'm sticking with Audirvana for the 2X DSD, on my Mytek Stereo 192/DSD Dac, for now.
Can you provide some more details on you computer system? 27% is not too high.
Playing files off USB with a USB DAC is not a good idea to start.
Why are you still at JR 19?
Yes, USB in and out. I just have not upgraded to Jriver 20 yet. Would that make a difference? What more do you want to know about eh laptop?
Exactly what computer, cpu etc?
It is a Gateway Laptop. CPU is AMD A4-5000. Drive C is a 500 gig and the ram has been increased from 4 to 8 gig. I have retained wifi function and virus protection so I can download off the net. I am also using one of the lesser invasive Fadelizer settings.
That is actually a pretty low power CPU. You will not really be able to to any up sampling to DSD successfully. You should have no problem playing DSD files though. Or any other resolutions for that matter. If they do not play, there is something else going on. When actually playing music, disable whatever you can Anti Virus etc.
I was afraid it might come down to that being the main reason. I have a Toshiba laptop with the intel I5 processor. I guess I will download media center and give it a try.
Is your laptop hardwired to your internet feed or are you going over WiFi?
Alan
I am using WiFi but the music I am trying to play is all on a USB hard drive connected directly to the laptop. USB ports are USB 2 and 3.
A simple test is to run a DPC latency checker
It will tell you if there is some driver hogging the system
