Also, "good ones like HP" is an oxymoron: of several laptops in our household, the only utter POS is HP one. Keys popping up, loose USB ports - things of that nature.
On Windows side, I would say the quality between major remaining players - Dell, Lenovo, HP, ASUS, Toshiba - is about on par, and is more down to your luck with a particular sample.
Personally, based on my recent experience with products from Lenovo, Toshiba, HP, Dell and ASUS, I would go with Lenovo or ASUS.

Hey, that ASUS Transformer Book that you recommend a while back has worked out very well for my need for a portable machine to read media and deal with email on the road. Nice screen, too. And well under $500. Thanks! With the keyboard attached and a good pair of strong reading glasses it is fully up to my notebook needs. (Not using it for audio.)
At the real low end I got a $79 tablet recently that runs Android Kit Kat 4.4. I got this so I could debug my website interface and music downloads on this platform after some customers were having problems. This is a real cheap POS with a horrible screen. However, even so it works well browsing NetFlix and then commanding ChromeCast to run on my TV. Also the power consumption is lower than with the nicer ASUS, probably due to the ARM processor and poor screen.

1. "Remote control" for my system.
2. My wife watches shows on it, while working out. Currently uses headphones, but I'm installing Bluetooth speakers - audio will be directed to those.
To my surprise, business Lenovos are better made and configured than business Dells.
I have had a few Dells but not one of them has been 100%.
