But this would require someone to listen to music on a decent system. And I mean actually listen critically.

We disagree on a lot of things, but I think we can both agree that audiophiles are a vanishingly small percentage of the overall audio market. If you have to "listen critically" on kilo buck systems in order to perceive the differences Pono brings to the table I don't think it's going to sell very well to the normal music listener who sees $400 as a lot to spend on a player.
If Pono only appeals to hard core audiophiles, then I submit it will end up being yet another DOA idea such as SACD.
But using my AudioEngine 2 loudspeakers the difference between mp3 and CD can be quite staggering. My son can tell the difference between lossless and mp3 using his iPod via his car stereo.
You don't need high end equipment to hear what is obvious. And most decent mid fi gear these days does a fine job revealing recording quality - ie. if the high resolution version is better than the CD (and it very well might be) a good NAD/PSB system is more than one is going to need in order to know.

That's my real problem with the PONO, even before spending the $400, one could easily think they need to buy those expensive reissues from the PONO music store. CD rips is all mp3 listeners will need to achieve musical nirvana. Do we want to educate the public on better sound or do we want to sell expensive remastered music? I don't know and I wonder how many musicians would be on this bandwagon if not for the Neil Young and the music store - they obviously didn't care much prior to PONO. Seems to me there's conflicting interests at work.

Heresy! ;)
With regard to Pono, I think it is and will remain much ado about nothing until studios and producers back away from the loudness wars. Only then will it be time to talk about higher resolution playback formats.
Great point well worth mentioning and an on point response to my comment. Thanks!
As always one needs to choose appropriate recordings. Higher resolution, in itself, means nothing - like always the onus is on the listener to make appropriate selections.
Is it fair to expect a little bit more sophistication and effort from someone who spends $400 on a high resolution player? I think so but such expectations are probably asking too much if one is trying to put an end to bad recording quality.

Will the public be willing to spend the additional money on a Pono Player and hi res music? That's a different subject for discussion. All of the above was about if there is a sonic difference between hi res and low res.
I would agree. The term "listen critically" is foreign to 99% of the population.
That is not some snobby remark, just what I feel is an actual figure.
It is no different in that I would not know how to compare wines critically.
Speaking of listening critically, I installed new interconnects and speaker cables yesterday. Lucy and I are in audio heaven.
Awwww C'mon Merc...what brand?
Synergistic Research Atmosphere UEF Level 4 interconnects and speaker cables replaced my 6 year old Synergistic Tesla Apex / Precision Reference. These cables have dispensed with Active Shielding.

Interesting. They used use some sort of fuse, or was it a tube, to shield to cables?
Why do you think there was a shift in design?
For what is worth, I have always thought Synergistic cables were coolest looking.
They do have a power supply for the Active Shielding that is tubed called the Enigma; but it is very expensive.
The Transporter Ultra is a solid state power supply that runs the cables, AC cables, etc. Synergistic will still be using Active Shielding on the AC cables and Digital cables. This power supply also powers the Tranquility Base and PowerCell.
The new cables use a ground wire that can plug into the wall or a UEF Ground Block that can ground 18 wires.
Very interesting. Thanks for the follow up. This is def. in the category of exotica.
