No intent to fan any flames. But I have a Pono player that I listen to all the time, and it sounds excellent. I'm not aware of a competing unit that matches its level of SQ and the ease with which you can load pre-ripped FLAC files, without spending noticeably more than $400 (much less the $300 I paid as an initial backer).
No, you can't use it to make phone calls or play Angry Birds. No, it doesn't do BlueTooth. But if you want a music player for FLAC files, no more no less, than the Pono player is a great way to go.
Happy listening,

Hi Jim:
thanks for your observations.
i believe there is one other player in the same price range from Fiio?
also, it should be noted that the Pono plays everything..Aiff, WAV, FLAC, ALAC etc..as far as I know.
How do you find the Pono software..which is basically Jriver, right?
It basically is JRiver. I understand it has some minor modifications from the commercially available JRiver, but I haven't cared to ferret it all out.
I think JRiver sounds great. The touch screen on the Pono player is kind of fiddly; not sure if that's a software issue or a hardware issue.
Happy listening,
Jim

Thanks for the additional feedback.
Without intending to butt in on a response from jec01, here is a relevant opinion from a Pono owner. Also see post #37 in that thread from Jud, who also posts here sometimes.
OTOH, I don't recall Darko or Lavorgna panning the software like that.
Thanks.
I don't have much use for the Pono software except as a download manager
i don't think most users will use it much beyond that either.
but would mostly want to use it in a vehicle - and neither my wife or I have auxiliary ports in our rigs. Most of the audiophile crowd is saying the SQ is superb while the Hydrogen Audio crowd is saying it is indistinguishable from an iPhone. LOL, who to believe? HA has never steered me wrong ;^)
The touch screen user interface is pretty finicky. When you're sitting at a desk or on a commuter train, that's not such a big deal. But if you're trying to scroll down to a specific file while idling at a red light (or God forbid while actually operating a moving vehicle), that's a big deal.
Happy listening,
Jim

I'm slightly curious too..but I have no application.
