hi thanks! it's nice to know this unit works fine, because yesterday i ordered one myself
you can see my DAC in the link below... but the reason why i need a good LINEAR power supply is rather related to the fact that i'm using a twin USB cable, so it has signal and power totally separated (Forzaaudioworks), and there is a difference in sound when you plug the power side on the computer, on a battery pack charger, or on a switching power supply (wallwarts, AC/Dc adapters, etc.); so now it's time to try a really good linear power supply, to make sure the voltage/amperage will be totally constant and well regulated; i'll post my results...
best, paco

Hi and thanks because i did not perform serious tests with itBut i see " Galvanic Isolation: ADuM 1250 chips " on the dac's page in the link
Have you tried a signal only usb cable ? maybe the dac works without the usb power. So the usb power supply is not needed.
I cut the power lines in a usb cable and a Cambridge Audio dacmagic is working the same (i.e. without the usb power), as it should for all nicely designed dac.I will read your review with great interest.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
bg

hi,
yep, i "try" what you propose every time i unplug the power leg to plug it into another power source, and i see how the DAC is always disconnected from the computer, as expected
so i't very surprising to me that your particular DAC do not need to be powered by the USB cable! perhaps it's being powered anyway, through the signal leg! yet this should results in some degradation of the signal!
best, paco
Ok no problem ... i am out of my field
I will read with interest your feedback on the Teradak ...
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

hi again, since i promised feedback on my Teradack, here is my review in Spanish
best, Paco
Hi Paco, many thanks for the interesting review!
May I ask you which USB cable is the one used at the +5V output on the Teradak?
thanks again
Kind regards,
bg
hi, no problem! my particular split cable is this:
http://forzaaudioworks.com/en/product.php?id_product=46
i chose it because of the good price/performance ratio, but there are many more in the market, most of them over $500
best, paco
Hi Paco and thank you very much again.
Very nice cable ... it looks better than the Teradak one.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

In which case, the DAC's Gnd is connected to the host's Gnd by some other route. USB's D+ and D- lines are a differential pair and work only where there's a Gnd connection as reference.
Whether the +5v line is needed for handshake purposes is a matter of design. Some DACs use it, others, inc mine, don't. There is perhaps a slight noise-reduction benefit in not using it but it's not a show-stopper.
as it should for all nicely designed dacs
Hmmmmm. See above.

Hi i would just explain better what i did
With reference to the picture i cut the shield, red and black wires leaving connected only the white and green and the dac worked without problem and i did not notice any difference in sound honestly
So i guess at least in that case a usb power supply will give no benefit.
Instead i am quite sure that it would give big benefits to those usb dacs relying only on usb power to work.
But if there is a galvanic isolation ... a better usb power maybe it is not needed.
Still i would like to have a usb dac able to work only with a usb data only cable ... as a principle.
Kind regards,
bg
