I found another article from BackBlaze which has statistics per drive model. See link below. The Hitachi drives look particularly good so far, but haven't been in service long enough to reach the back end of the bathtub curve. The Seagate drives all look terrible except for the Barracuda LP, which is borderline acceptable. And I am pleasantly surprised by the WD Green models. One model has been in service for an average of 4.4 years with a 3.6% annual failure rate (i.e. about 85% of these are still in service after 4.4 years) and the other model has been in service for an average of 5 years with no failures. So maybe I shouldn't be so concerned about my drives.
One other thing we should keep in mind is that the BackBlaze reliability data reflects disk usage in a data center environment, where the drives aren't been subject to a significant workload. If you use the same drives in a consumer NAS, you might get different results. For example, if the NAS sleeps when not in use, the drives will be subject to frequent power cycling like in a desktop or laptop. Also, Linux is notorious for frequent hard drive polling, so I would not recommend using a "Green" drive in a Linux-based NAS. The Green drives park their heads after a short period of idle time to save energy, and with Linux constantly accessing the drive with a polling interval that's only a little bit longer, it leads to excessive park/unpark cycles which wear out the drive. That doesn't occur with Windows or Mac OS X, which are more optimized for power saving.

Hi and thanks a lot for the very helpful advice
Honestly i was surprised, by this is due also to my ignorance on the matter
When i read the MTBF figures of 1.000.000 hours i thought that reliability were not an issue for hard disks
Instead now i understand that is indeed an issue
Yes Hitachi disks come out very well from these tests by Backblaze
And after this i have read other very positive opinions on them
A little less common and a little more expensive than the other brands
I see here a 3TB 6Gb/s model ... not exactly cheap at around 160 USD
But quality very seldom comes cheap
Thanks again
Kind regards,

Hi Mr Lauck,
thanks a lot for the interesting link
Unfortunately my understanding of theory/math has always been very limited
On this basis i find easier to understand and also very telling these reports from online backup Companies like Backblaze about failures.
This for me is the best way to check the reliability of brands/ models.
Huge number of units under continuous stress.
I am also sure that this issue of understanding the hard disks reliability is of paramount importance for these Companies.
And also garph like the one attached above are quite easy to understand also for me
In the end the Backblaze reports are to me a great endorsement of Hitachi drives
But also some WD drives seem to perform OK.
I think i will go with some WD RED in the end.
Thanks a lot again.
Kind regards,
bg
