Decided to go the PC route, I will put all my cd's on a hard drive but now I have to decide which way to go?
Should I get a dedicated small laptop or a media player + a good DAC
If I went for a media player I would still need a screen to do my selections. I am a real beginner so I hope my questions are not sounding stupid?
I hope to store 3000-4000 cds. I will keep my HQ SACD player to play my SACD's. Thanks in advance
Follow Ups:
I'm using Squeezebox Touch (SBT), has screen able to connect to PC through Wifi or NAS or inserted SD card.
I rip all my fav CD (FLAC file) store in SD Card, plug to SBT.
I added external DAC connected to SBT to make better sound, tube amp ,speaker.
The reason why I didn't use PC or laptop, I don't want my laptop running for long hours everyday. I turn on SBT to listen jazz file or radio stream almost 12 hour/day.
I also listen music use laptop (Foobar), DAC and headphone but not for long time 1-2 hour only.
I like being able to sit with the laptop at my listening position. I can use remote app, but is nice to have it all right there.
I'm thinking the UI should be on my cell phone - rarely will I want to go to the system to make adjustments.
Currently I'm using desktop on one system and an iPod on the other. Ideally I would like a phone app to control the DAP connected to a SS hard-drive.
My thinking is the DAP is going to be close to the DAC and both are going to be close to the system. The less mass, voltage and hardware involved in the process the better.
I had an OPPO-BD95 here for a couple of years but the monitor/networking requirements were just to much of a hassle. In fact I would prefer no monitor at all - just a cell phone app.
I'm approaching 3000 albums in my digital library (most are recordings off of vinyl).
I need to check it out but an AppleTV or AppleTalk might do exactly what I want - connect directly to a harddrive and allow me to select what to play on a iPhone app.
I'm using a Cambridge Audio DacMagic for the PC (via 30ft cable) and an hrt iStreamer DAC for the iPod.
I'm looking to replace the iPod/iStreamer with a Schitt DAC & a remote controlled DAP with a HD interface.
Give me rhythm or give me death!
I use a dedicated Windows 8.1 laptop. It has a 17" screen which I find quite adequate. I did double the ram and added jriver media player 19. I have my music on a USB hard drive and use USB out to a DAC.
just makes it more fun and involved. Does it effect sound quality? I suppose some will argue it does, but my system still sounds as good or better than it did with my CDP, so for me there are no issues. As far as making selections with a media player, there is usually at least some sort of small display, if only text. The Sony has a display that shows the album cover and if that's all you need then your on your way...
SACD will certainly play via JRiver Media or other modern players. JRiver is a good sounding and well thought out music player/manager. Check it out. Many DAC's today are DSD capable to handle SACD rips.
Storage is no problem with a 3 or 4 TB USB hard drive. Storage is cheap. Remember to back up and back up your back up!!
I've heard backing up and restoring a one box media player can be a challenge so look into that. Me thinks media players sometimes use encryption. So, restoring to a different device could be a problem. Check it out.
