SQ is the main thing..
Part of the issue is that reviewers are reviewing and comparing, and the reader is often not sure what they're comparing, and if they've optimized them.....
The Touch is so popular, and so chocked full of features, and also has the ability to be highly optimized.
My point is that a $1300 Sim Audio Mind will blow away a SBT without a 3rd party upgraded power supply, the screen defeated, and/or running the analog outs. But will it if the SBT has the upgrades, & running SPDIF?
Sprezza has both, and has tested it, so we know that the MIND is better, but when we're talking about bang for the buck, or replacing those off the shelf computers, - it's important to make the comparisons thorough.
Cheers,

it's so easy to turn off the "noisy" screen, analog outputs, employ a linear power supply and use USB output.I'm less convinced that the SOtM is necessarily going to knock my socks off vs. an optimized Touch.
edit: Is this a "noisy" screen, too?
that the screen is insanely noisy. As CutThroat says, defeating it is pretty easy. In my case, - the SBT is in the bedroom system, and me turning on and off the screen doesn't make a noticeable difference. The thing is that some folks may be comparing the SBT with the SoTM as they're roughly the same price. Whether or not you get the Power Supplies will likely have a significant impact to both SQ and budget. If you drop a $1000 on the SoTM with PSU, - I would expect it to be significantly better than the SBT without an upgraded PSU. If you upgrade the SBT with a PSU and not the SoTM what happens? And how does the SoTM compare to the MIND?
AFA Audio Research, - gosh...
Of course these crazy all-in-one guys are different beasties....
Cheers,
First of all, no need to apologize. My reference to "noisy" screens is based upon what Mr. Studied Carelessness has mentioned on more than one occasion.
Sure, turning off the screen is simply a menu option. Which for me is not a compelling reason to switch gear. :)
Kind of a dickish post.
the seeming disconnect between what you view as a serious limitation:
The SOtM's firmware is more stripped down and it has no wifi receiver, and no display , which also adds to its sonic purity...
The Touch, with its display , is going to be far noisier than the SOtM...
I use the EDO, which disables the analog outputs, an even bigger improvement than killing the screen ...
Your approach:
Yes. I just kept the screens on.
And the ease with which one can disable the screen for either on or off operation. You can select to display the clock when off and disable the screen during playback.
I must be missing something.
Maybe what I did not make clear was that the SBT was never my main source. It was ALWAYS a secondary source so I never went overboard. Originally I thought I could replace my very fine CD player with it, and I came close, but it still never sound quite as good..VERY good mind you..but not as good.
I then compared it to higher end streamers and determined there was too much of a performance gap..again, the SBT is terrific, and only comes second with direct comparisons.
For those who DO use the SBT as their main source, eliminating the screen and shutting off the analog outputs etc etc WILL make a difference.

How does the SOTM compare to your current high end streamers?
