I have just started using a Synology NAS.
I use the iTunes app and can access it from any computer with iTunes.
JRiver is able to access the files on the NAS with cover art (something iTunes doesn't seem to just yet)
I find that I can access movie files on the NAS using an Oppo Blue Ray player.
So far its working quite nicely.

Hi and thank you very much indeed for your helpful reply
Do you experience any difference in sound using iTunes or JRiver ?
I understand that it works ok but do you like the overall sound ?
Thanks again
Kind regards,

There are many ways to Roma.
To mention 2
1 DLNA
You can configure the NAS to act as a DLNA server (as the Synology also can play audio, it probably acts as a renderer to)
In this scenario all other DLNA compliant devices can browse the contents of the server and play it.
If the Synology also can play, DLNA compliant apps can act as a control point, telling the server what to play.
This is a nice and pretty popular solutions. A lot of devices today (TV, Android smartphones, Win)are DLNA compliant.
IMHO performance is a bit sludgy.
It is often a bit unclear how audio is send.
Just like USB, DLNA does device enumeration. Both know what the others capabilities are. Nice because everything play, not so nice, it might be that audio is down-sampled.
It is not easy to find out if this is the case.
This is the conventional way (NAS= Network Attached Storage)
All audio is stored on a share and the media player access it just like files stored on a local HD.
This allows you to maintain your collection e.g. tagging just like you do with data on a HD.
An obvious one is that this is a must, as you do have to maintain your collection.
Performance is in general crisp compared with DLNA.
You have full control as you can configure your media player to be bit perfect.
Obvious only devices able to connect to this share, can play the content.
.
The Well Tempered Computer
Hi and thanks a lot
I understand i have a lot to learn really
Now the nas is connected to an Asus 66 router
It is important to know that only Option 2 Share can give the best sound
But i will read carefully your advice and try to understand the basics
Thanks again
Kind regards,
