Hey guys, thought some might be interested in results of the iPhone 4 & 6; iPhone 6 arguably being the most interesting portable music player currently by virtue of how many they're likely going to be selling worldwide.
Overall, I'd certainly be very happy listening to music on this device. Measures well to 24/48, clearly benefiting from >16-bit data and I didn't know Apple has been using minimum phase digital filtering all these years.
Have a good weekend, all...

Perhaps you'd find out first what device/manufactuerer/OS resamples all the data.
Because they do resample the data. From what I heard Android is not the best perfomer on this task. (They promise to do better on Android L)
Beside that the different OSes and even OS revisions come with different mixers, algorithms, internal bit depths etc..What are you actually comparing??
You might be comparing resampler, mixer, DSP performances after all.
There are also reported differences between e.g. Android 4.3. and 4.4.
Perhaps you should also look for playback software that manages to play "native" data. Otherwise comparisons become kind of misleading.
I know, I know. In the end counts what's coming out.However. A change of playback software could easily change your results. Here again your measurements would turn out to be more or less useless.
Enjoy.

And interesting to boot. I appreciate the epilogue and market considerations you factored in as issues for hi-res development in this space. Often, this is overlooked or omitted when criticism and disappointment is expressed about the business model but it makes perfect sense.
Q: are the jitter graphs correctly labeled? I wondered if the devices to which they were attributed were the other way around?
All this said, I've got so bored with *portable* digital audio, I decided to buy - the horror! - a NOS cassette walkman and have fun that way! I know its limitations (and still have a smartphone - 4S) but don't feel terribly shortchanged. Making mixtapes is still fun.

What exactly does "minimum phase digital filtering" mean? Is it supposed to be better than linear phase? The iPhone square waves show significant phase shift revealed by unsymmetrical ringing. This is how square waves looked on the original CD players from Sony and Phillips in the early 1980s.Linear phase for a square wave from a digital device that truncates higher harmonics abruptly looks like this.

Here is an actual 1000-Hz square wave from a CD player with linear phase playing a test CD.

iPhone 6 arguably being the most interesting portable music player currently by virtue of how many they're likely going to be selling worldwide.
iPhone 6 had a record launch out pacing the previous iPhone 5 / 5S. They sold over 10 million iPhone 6 units in it's first weekend and 3rd party analytics data estimate they are over 21 million units thus far, without China. They launch in China ~Oct 17th. AAPL stock is also near record levels at a pre-split (1:7) equivalent price of $707/share.
Having seen iPhone's record launch, Samsung had to move up its Galaxy Note 4 launch in China & S.Korea..... and up their spending on advertising and iPhone attack ads.
My wife got her iPhone 6 last week and she loves it. And since she doesn't fit in ultra-tight 'skinny jeans' and she doesn't sit on her iPhone, there will be no risk of it ever bending. She also likes listening to music on it says it sounds better than her older iPhone 4S.
I use my iPhone 5S mainly for work and will not be upgrading to the iPhone 6 anytime soon.... maybe the iPhone 6S someday. ;-)
As for the iPhone 6 Plus and other "phablet" devices, they're too large for my liking. They don't fit in my pocket and I don't like placing a toast-sized phone up against my ear!
"And since she doesn't fit in ultra-tight 'skinny jeans'"
Men have been poisoned for less...
She doesn't view this forum.... I hope. ;-)
